How to Vanquish Fear

[Editor's Note: This title of this piece was provided by Justin, the person who sent this excerpted conversation between Carlos Castenedas
and don Juan, the Yaqui shaman who explains to Carlos the nature of the hidden fourth dimensional predators who plague humanity. Don
Juan calls them the "flyers." The name refers to the darting shadows that some people can notice from the corner of their eyes when in a
dark room. I'm not an expert on Carlos Castenedas books, but I think he wrote them in the 1940's and 50's. I'm greatly impressed by
the information being relayed here. This information would have been very hard to accept at that time, as we were only starting to become
aware of UFOs and an alien presence. In 2007, we now possess much more information about the alien manipulators that control the
leaders of all major governments and are, in fact, the driving force behind the implementation of the New World Order nightmare. I
remind readers of a comment that Phil Schneider made to a question from someone in his audience at his last lecture given in September
of 1995 in Seattle, Washington. He said that "the alien agenda and the New World Order agenda are one and the same."

Don Juan explains that these aliens think of (and treat) humans as a food source and can overlay the human psyche in order to keep
us dumbed down and unaware of their influence, however, it's possible, he says, to dislodge them through discipline. By allowing
ourselves to be immersed in destructive emotions: fear, anxiety, anger, strife, jealousy, competitiveness, the dog-eat-dog mentality
(just think of the daily fare on TV-Court TV, Survival shows, Reality shows, Apprentice  shows,  violent cartoons, Jerry Springer type
shows, etc.) we hold at minimum our "shining coat of awareness", thus serving the alien agenda. We can rebuild our "shining coat"
and no longer be under the influence of those dark forces by removing the "self" from our focus of existence.

A conversation between Carlos Castenedas and Yaqui shaman don Juan

    "They discovered that we have a companion for life," he said, as clearly as he could. "We have a predator that came from the
depths of the cosmos, and took over the rule of our lives. Human beings are its prisoners. The predator is our lord and master.
"It has rendered us docile; helpless. If we want to protest, it suppresses our protest. If we want to act independently, it demands
that we don't do so."It was very dark around us, and that seemed to curtail any expression on my part. If it had been daylight,
I would have laughedmy head off. In the dark, I felt quite inhibited.
"It's pitch black around us," don Juan said, "but if you look out of the corner of your eye, you will still see fleeting shadows jumping
all around you."
He was right. I could still see them. Their movement made me dizzy. Don Juan turned on the light, and that seemed to dissipate
everything.

Don Juan said, "You have arrived, by your effort alone, to what the shamans of ancient Mexico called the topic of topics.
"I have been beating around the bush all this time, insinuating to you that something is holding us prisoner. Indeed we are held
 prisoner! This was an energetic fact for the sorcerers of ancient Mexico."
"Why has this predator taken over in the fashion that you're describing, don Juan?" I asked. "There must be a logical explanation.
"There is an explanation," don Juan replied, "which is the simplest explanation in the world.
"They took over because we are food for them, and they squeeze us mercilessly because we are their sustenance.
"Just as we rear chickens in chicken coops, gallineros, the predators rear us in human coops, humaneros. Therefore, their food is
always available to them."
I felt that my head was shaking violently from side to side. I could not express my profound sense of unease and discontentment,
 but my body moved to bring it to the surface. I shook from head to toe without any volition on my part.

I heard myself saying, "No, no, no, no. This is absurd, don Juan. What you're saying is something monstrous. It simply can't be
true, for sorcerers, or for average men, or for anyone."
"Why not?" don Juan asked calmly. "Why not? Because it infuriates you?"
"Yes, it infuriates me," I retorted. "Those claims are monstrous!"
"Well," he said, "you haven't heard all the claims yet. Wait a bit longer and see how you feel"I'm going to subject you to a blitz.
That is, I'm going to subject your mind to tremendous onslaughts; and you cannot get up
and leave because you're caught. Not because I'm holding you prisoner, but because something in you will prevent you from
leaving while another part of you is going to go truthfully berserk. So brace yourself!"

There was something in me which I felt was a 'glutton for punishment'. He was right. I wouldn't have left the house for the
world; and yet I didn't like one bit the inanities he was spouting.

Don Juan said, "I want to appeal to your analytical mind. Think for a moment, and tell me how you would explain the contradiction
 between the intelligence of man the engineer, and the stupidity of his systems of beliefs; or the stupidity of his contradictory behavior.

"Sorcerers believe that the predators have given us our systems of beliefs; our ideas of good and evil; our social mores.
The predators are the ones who set up our hopes and expectations, and dreams of success or failure. They have given us
covetousness, [* covetousness- an envious eagerness to possess something] greed, and cowardice. It is the predators who
make us complacent, routinary, and egomaniacal."

 "But how can they do this, don Juan?" I asked, somehow angered further by what he was saying. "Do they whisper all that
in our ears while we are asleep?"

"No, they don't do it that way. That's idiotic!" don Juan said, smiling. "They are infinitely more efficient and organized than that.
"In order to keep us obedient, meek and weak, the predators engaged themselves in a stupendous maneuver- stupendous, of
course, from the point of view of a fighting strategist; a horrendous maneuver from the point of view of those who suffer it.

"They gave us their mind! Do you hear me? The predators give us their mind which becomes our mind. The predators' mind
 is baroque, contradictory, morose, and filled with the fear of being discovered any minute now.

"I know that even though you have never suffered hunger," he went on, "you have food anxiety which is none other than the
anxiety of the predator who fears that any moment now its maneuver is going to be uncovered, and its food is going to be denied.

"Through the mind, which after all is their mind, the predators inject into the lives of human beings whatever is convenient for
them. The predators ensure in this manner a degree of security to act as a buffer against their fear."

"It's not that I can't accept all this at face value, don Juan," I said. "I could, but there's something so odious about it that it
actually repels me. It forces me to take a contradictory stand.

"If it's true that they eat us, how do they do it?"

Don Juan had a broad smile on his face. He was as pleased as punch.
He explained that sorcerers see infant human beings as strange, luminous balls of energy covered from the top to the bottom
with a glowing coat something like a plastic cover that is adjusted tightly over their cocoon of energy.

He said that that glowing coat of awareness was what the predators consumed, and that when a human being reached adulthood,
all that was left of that glowing coat of awareness was a narrow fringe that went from the ground to the top of the toes. That fringe
permitted mankind to continue living, but only barely.
As if I were in a dream, I heard don Juan explaining that, to his knowledge, man was the only species that had the glowing coat
of awareness outside that luminous cocoon. Therefore, he became easy prey for an awareness of a different order; such as the
heavy awareness of the predator.
He then made the most damaging statement he had made so far. He said that this narrow fringe of awareness was the epicenter
of self-reflection where man was irremediably caught.

By playing on our self-reflection, which is the only point of awareness left to us, the predators create flares of awareness that they
proceed to consume in a ruthless, predatory fashion.
They give us inane problems that force those flares of awareness to rise, and in this manner they keep us alive in order for them
to be fed with the energetic flare of our pseudo-concerns.There must have been something in what don Juan was saying which was
so devastating to me that at that point I actually got sick to my stomach.
After a moment's pause long enough for me to recover, I asked don Juan, "But why is it that the sorcerers of ancient Mexico and
 all sorcerers today, although they see the predators, don't do anything about it?"

 "There's nothing that you and I can do about it," don Juan said in a grave, sad voice. "All we can do is discipline ourselves to the
point where they will not touch us.

"How can you ask your fellow men to go through those rigors of discipline? They'll laugh and make fun of you; and the more
aggressive ones will beat the shit out of you- and not so much because they don't believe it.

"Down in the depths of every human being, there is an ancestral, visceral [* visceral- obtained through intuition rather than from
reasoning or observation] knowledge about the predators' existence."

My analytical mind swung back and forth like a yo-yo. It left me and came back, and left me and came back again. Whatever
don Juan was proposing was preposterous, incredible.

At the same time, it was a most reasonable thing; so simple. It explained every kind of human contradiction I could think of.
But how could one have taken all this seriously? Don Juan was pushing me into the path of an avalanche that would take me
down forever.
I felt another wave of a threatening sensation. The wave didn't stem from me, yet it was attached to me. Don Juan was doing
something to me, mysteriously positive and terribly negative at the same time. I sensed it as an attempt to cut a thin film that
seemed to be glued to me.
His eyes were fixed on mine in an unblinking stare. He moved his eyes away, and began to talk without looking at me anymore.
"Whenever doubts plague you to a dangerous point," he said, "do something pragmatic about it. Turn off the light. Pierce the
darkness; find out what you can see."  He got up to turn off the lights. I stopped him.
"No, no, don Juan," I said, "don't turn off the lights. I'm doing okay."

What I felt then was a most unusual, for me, fear of the darkness. The mere thought of it made me pant. I definitely knew
something viscerally, [* visceral- relating to or affecting internal organs collectively rather than from reasoning or observation]
but I wouldn't dare touch it, or bring it to the surface, not in a million years!

 "You saw the fleeting shadows against the trees," don Juan said, sitting back against his chair. "That's pretty good. I'd like
you to see them inside this room. You're not seeing anything. You're just merely catching fleeting images. You have enough energy
 for that."
I feared that don Juan would get up anyway and turn off the lights, which he did. Two seconds later, I was screaming my head
off. Not only did I catch a glimpse of those fleeting images, I heard them buzzing by my ears.
Don Juan doubled up with laughter as he turned on the lights.
"What a temperamental fellow!" he said. "A total disbeliever, on the one hand; and a total pragmatist on the other.
"You must arrange this internal fight, otherwise you're going to swell up like a big toad and burst."
Don Juan kept on pushing his barb deeper and deeper into me. "The sorcerers of ancient Mexico," he said, "saw the predator.
They called it the flyer because it leaps through the air. It is not a pretty sight. It is a big shadow, impenetrably dark, a black
shadow that jumps through the air. Then, it lands flat on the ground.

"The sorcerers of ancient Mexico were quite ill at ease with the idea of when it made its appearance on Earth. They reasoned
that man must have been a complete being at one point, with stupendous insights and feats of awareness that are mythological
legends nowadays. And then everything seems to disappear, and we have now a sedated man."
  
I wanted to get angry and call him a paranoiac, but somehow the righteousness that was usually just underneath the surface
of my being wasn't there.Something in me was beyond the point of asking myself my favorite question: What if all that he said
is true? At the moment he was talking to me that night, in my heart of hearts, I felt that all of what he was saying was true, but
at the same time and with equal force, I felt that all that he was saying was absurdity itself.

"What are you saying, don Juan?" I asked feebly. My throat was constricted. I could hardly breathe.
"What I'm saying is that what we have against us is not a simple predator. It is very smart and organized. It follows a methodical
system to render us useless. Man, the magical being that he is destined to be, is no longer magical. He's an average piece of meat.
There are no more dreams for man but the dreams of an animal who is being raised to become a piece of meat: trite, conventional,
imbecilic."

Don Juan's words were eliciting a strange, bodily reaction in me comparable to the sensation of nausea. It was as if I were going
to get sick to my stomach again. But the nausea was coming from the bottom of my being, from the marrow of my bones. I convulsed
involuntarily. Don Juan shook me by the shoulders forcefully. I felt my neck wobbling back and forth under the impact of his grip.
The maneuver calmed me down at once. I felt more in control.

"This predator," don Juan said, "which, of course, is an inorganic being, is not altogether invisible to us as other inorganic beings
are. I think as children we do see it, but we decide it's so horrific that we don't want to think about it.
"Children, of course, could insist on focusing on the sight, but everybody else around them dissuades them from doing so.
Continuing, he said, "The only alternative left for mankind is discipline. Discipline is the only deterrent.

"But by discipline I don't mean harsh routines. I don't mean waking up every morning at five-thirty and throwing cold water
on yourself until you're blue.
"Sorcerers understand discipline as the capacity to face with serenity odds that are not included in our expectations. For sorcerers,
discipline is an art; the art of facing infinity without flinching; not because they are strong and tough, but because they are filled
with awe."
"In what way would the sorcerers' discipline be a deterrent to the flyers?" I asked.
Don Juan scrutinized my face as if to discover any signs of my disbelief. He said,"Sorcerers say that discipline makes the glowing
coat of awareness unpalatable to the flyer.
"The result is that the predators become bewildered. An inedible glowing coat of awareness is not part of their cognition, I suppose.
 After being bewildered, they don't have any recourse other than refraining from continuing their nefarious [* nefarious- extremely
wicked] task.
He continued, saying, "If the predators don't eat our glowing coat of awareness for a while, it will keep on growing. Simplifying
this matter to the extreme, I can say that sorcerers, by means of their discipline, push the predators away long enough to allow their
 glowing coat of awareness to grow beyond the level of the toes. Once it goes beyond the level of the toes, it grows back to its natural
size.

"The sorcerers of ancient Mexico used to say that the glowing coat of awareness is like a tree. If it is not pruned, it grows to its
natural size and volume. As awareness reaches levels higher than the toes, tremendous maneuvers of perception become a matter
of course.

"The grand trick of those sorcerers of ancient times," don Juan continued, "was to burden the flyers' mind with discipline."Sorcerers
found out that if they taxed the flyers' mind with inner silence, the foreign installation would flee, and give any one
of the practitioners involved in this maneuver the total certainty of the mind's foreign origin.

    "The foreign installation comes back, I assure you, but not as strong; and a process begins in which the fleeing of the flyers'
mind becomes routine until one day it flees permanently.

    "That's the day when you have to rely on your own devices which are nearly zero. A sad day indeed! There's no one to tell you
 what to do. There's no mind of foreign origin to dictate the imbecilities you're accustomed to.

 "My teacher, the nagual Julian, used to warn all his disciples," don Juan continued,"that this was the toughest day in a sorcerer's
 life for the real mind that belongs to us.

"The sum total of our experience after a lifetime of domination has been rendered shy, insecure, and shifty.
"Personally, I would say that the real battle of sorcerers begins at that moment. The rest is merely preparation."
I became genuinely agitated. I wanted to know more, and yet a strange feeling in me clamored for me to stop. It alluded to
dark results and punishment, something like the wrath of God descending on me for tampering with something veiled by God
himself. I made a supreme effort to allow my curiosity to win.
I heard myself say, "What-what-what do you mean, by taxing the flyers' mind?"
"Discipline taxes the foreign mind no end," he replied. "So, through their discipline, sorcerers vanquish the foreign installation."

I was overwhelmed by his statements. I believed that don Juan was either certifiably insane or that he was telling me something
so awesome that it froze everything in me.

I noticed, however how quickly I rallied my energy to deny everything he had said. After an instant of panic, I began to laugh, as
if don Juan had told me a joke. I even heard myself saying, "Don Juan, don Juan, you're incorrigible!" [* incorrigible- not capable
of being affected by correction or punishment]

Don Juan seemed to understand everything I was experiencing. He shook his head from side to side, and raised his eyes to the
heavens in a gesture of mock despair.

He said, "I am so incorrigible, that I am going to give the flyers' mind which you carry inside you one more jolt. I am going to
 reveal to you one of the most extraordinary secrets of sorcery. I am going to describe to you a finding that took sorcerers thousands
 of years to verify and consolidate."

He looked at me, smiled maliciously, and said, "The flyers' mind flees forever when a sorcerer succeeds in grabbing on to the
vibrating force that holds us together as a conglomerate of energy fields. If a sorcerer maintains that pressure long enough, the
flyers' mind flees in defeat. And that's exactly what you are going to do; hold on to the energy that binds you together."

I had the most inexplicable reaction I could have imagined. Something in me actually shook, as if it had received a jolt. I entered
 into a state of unwarranted fear, which I immediately associated with my religious background.

    Don Juan looked at me from head to toe.

    "You are fearing the wrath of God, aren't you?" he said. "Rest assured, that's not your fear. It's the flyers' fear, because it knows
that you will do exactly as I'm telling you."

    His words did not calm me at all. I felt worse. I was actually convulsing involuntarily, and I had no means to stop it.

    "Don't worry," don Juan said calmly. "I know for a fact that those attacks wear off very quickly. The flyer's mind has no concentration
whatsoever."

    After a moment, everything stopped as don Juan had predicted. To say again that I was bewildered is a euphemism.
 [* euphemism-an inoffensive expression that is substituted for one that is considered offensive]

    This was the first time in my life ever, with don Juan or alone, that I didn't know whether I was coming or going.

    I wanted to get out of the chair and walk around, but I was deathly afraid. I was filled with rational assertions, and at the same
time I was filled with an infantile fear.

    I began to breathe deeply as a cold perspiration covered my entire body. I had somehow unleashed on myself a most godawful
 sight: black, fleeting shadows jumping all around me wherever I turned.

    I closed my eyes and rested my head on the arm of the stuffed chair. "I don't know which way to turn, don Juan," I said. "Tonight,
you have really succeeded in getting me lost."

Don Juan said, "You're being torn by an internal struggle.

"Down in the depths of you, you know that you are incapable of refusing the agreement that an indispensable part of you, your
glowing coat of awareness, is going to serve as an incomprehensible source of nourishment to, naturally, incomprehensible entities.

 "And another part of you will stand against this situation with all its might.

"The sorcerers' revolution," he continued, "is that they refuse to honor agreements in which they did not participate.

  "Nobody ever asked me if I would consent to being eaten by beings of a different kind of awareness. My parents just brought me
 into this world to be food, like themselves, and that's the end of the story."

Don Juan stood up from his chair and stretched his arms and legs. "We have been sitting here for hours. It's time to go into the
 house. I'm going to eat. Do you want to eat with me?"

I declined. My stomach was in an uproar.

"I think you'd better go to sleep," he said. "The blitz has devastated you."

I didn't need any further coaxing. I collapsed onto my bed, and fell asleep like the dead.

At home, as time went by, the idea of the flyers became one of the main fixations of my life. I got to the point where I felt that
 don Juan was absolutely right about them. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't discard his logic.

The more I thought about it, and the more I talked to and observed myself, and my fellow men, the more intense the conviction
that something was rendering us incapable of any activity or any interaction or any thought that didn't have the self as its focal point.

My concern, as well as the concern of everyone I knew or talked to, was the self.

 Since I couldn't find any explanation for such universal homogeneity, I believed that don Juan's line of thought was the most
appropriate way of elucidating the phenomenon.

 I went as deeply as I could into readings about myths and legends. In reading, I experienced something I had never felt before:
 Each of the books I read was an interpretation of myths and legends. In each one of those books, a homogeneous mind was palpable.

The styles differed, but the drive behind the words was homogeneously the same: Even though the theme was something as
abstract as myths and legends, the authors always managed to insert statements about themselves. The homogeneous drive behind
 every one of those books was not the stated theme of the book. Instead, it was self-service. I had never felt this before.

I attributed my reaction to don Juan's influence. The unavoidable question that I posed to myself was: Is he influencing me to see
 this, or is there really a foreign mind dictating everything we do?

I lapsed, perforce, into denial again, and I went insanely from denial to acceptance to denial. Something in me knew that whatever
don Juan was driving at was an energetic fact; but something equally important in me knew that all of that was guff.

The end result of my internal struggle was a sense of foreboding; the sense of something imminently dangerous coming at me.

I made extensive anthropological inquiries into the subject of the flyers in other cultures, but I couldn't find any references to
them anywhere. Don Juan seemed to be the only source of information about this matter.

 The next time I saw him, I instantly jumped to talk about the flyers.

I said, "I have tried my best to be rational about this subject matter, but I can't. There are moments when I fully agree with you
 about the predators."

"Focus your attention on the fleeting shadows that you actually see," don Juan said with a smile.

I told don Juan that those fleeting shadows were going to be the end of my rational life. I saw them everywhere.

Since I had left his house, I was incapable of going to sleep in the dark. To sleep with the lights on did not bother me at all.
The moment I turned the lights off, however, everything around me began to jump. I never saw complete figures or shapes.
All I saw were fleeting black shadows.

"The flyers' mind has not left you," don Juan said. "It has been seriously injured. It's trying its best to rearrange its relationship
with you. But something in you is severed forever. The flyer knows that. The real danger is that the flyers' mind may win by getting
you tired and forcing you to quit by playing the contradiction between what it says and what I say.

"You see, the flyers' mind has no competitors," don Juan continued. "When it proposes something, it agrees with its own proposition,
and it makes you believe that you've done something of worth.

"The flyers' mind will say to you that whatever Juan Matus is telling you is pure nonsense, and then the same mind will agree with
its own proposition, 'Yes, of course, it is nonsense,' you will say. That's the way they overcome us.

"The flyers are an essential part of the universe," he went on, "and they must be taken as what they really are- awesome, monstrous.
They are the means by which the universe tests us.

"We are energetic probes created by the universe," he continued as if he were oblivious to my presence, "and it's because we are
possessors of energy that has awareness that we are the means by which the universe becomes aware of itself.

"The flyers are the implacable [* implacable- incapable of being more favourably inclined, or gaining the good will of] challengers.
They cannot be taken as anything else. If we succeed in doing that, the universe allows us to continue."

I wanted don Juan to say more. But he said only, "The blitz ended the last time you were here. There's only so much to be said
about the flyers.

Upcoming one-man Show at the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio
My exhibit will open on February 1st 2009, at The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio, with 12 or more works approximately
40" x 60 ", some portrait some landscape.
 
I am working hard trying to create and codify lots of feelings thinking and images... Usually I have a year or two to create the art and a curator
 picks from that body of work. This situation is unique  and energizing I am happy to say just 4 months ago I sold 2 prints, so I can afford the
up front cost of doing a full scale one man show 12" x 55",  a big chunk of space... with three months to go, takes 2 months to print and mount
 so I am crazy happy busy...  Drawing my inspiration from artist such as William Hogarth, Francisco Goya, Picasso, René Magritte.

I am at a good point in the personal myth process.

Currently enjoying juxtaposing the neo-iconic anthropomorphic blue-eyed elbow macaroni on even my "most serious work"...

    In a breakthrough paper published in Science, researchers from The University of Manchester, The University of Bristol and Sandia National
Laboratories report the potentially revolutionary effects of Criegee biradicals.

    These invisible chemical intermediates are powerful oxidisers of pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide, produced by combustion,
 and can naturally clean up the atmosphere.

    Although these chemical intermediates were hypothesised in the 1950s, it is only now that they have been detected. Scientists now believe that,
with further research, these species could play a major role in off-setting climate change.

    The detection of the Criegee biradical and measurement of how fast it reacts was made possible by a unique apparatus, designed by Sandia
researchers, that uses light from a third-generation synchrotron facility, at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Advanced Light Source.

    The intense, tunable light from the synchrotron allowed researchers to discern the formation and removal of different isomeric species --
molecules that contain the same atoms but arranged in different combinations.

    The researchers found that the Criegee biradicals react more rapidly than first thought and will accelerate the formation of sulphate and
nitrate in the atmosphere. These compounds will lead to aerosol formation and ultimately to cloud formation with the potential to cool the planet.

    The formation of Criegee biradicals was first postulated by Rudolf Criegee in the 1950s. However, despite their importance, it has not been
 possible to directly study these important species in the laboratory.

    In the last 100 years, Earth's average surface temperature increased by about 0.8 °C with about two thirds of the increase occurring over just the last three decades.

    Most countries have agreed that drastic cuts in greenhouse gas emissions are required, and that future global warming should be limited to below 2.0 °C (3.6 °F).

    Dr Carl Percival, Reader in Atmospheric Chemistry at The University of Manchester and one of the authors of the paper, believes there could be
 significant research possibilities arising from the discovery of the Criegee biradicals.

    He said: "Criegee radicals have been impossible to measure until this work carried out at the Advanced Light Source. We have been able to
quantify how fast Criegee radicals react for the first time.

    "Our results will have a significant impact on our understanding of the oxidising capacity of the atmosphere and have wide ranging implications
for pollution and climate change.

    "The main source of these Criegee biradicals does not depend on sunlight and so these processes take place throughout the day and night."

    Professor Dudley Shallcross, Professor in Atmospheric Chemistry at The University of Bristol, added: "A significant ingredient required for the production
 of these Criegee biradicals comes from chemicals released quite naturally by plants, so natural ecosystems could be playing a significant role in off-setting warming."

    Any of you who are familiar with Dover Books, know what a great resource they can be of public domain images from previous centuries,
 particularly from the 19th century when thousands of engravings were published for novels, texts, catalogs and periodicals.

    Many artists have used the Dover collections of these images as reference. Other artists have made more direct use of them to make new art.

    Artist Caleb Johnston has taken a number of these examples of 19th century publishing technology and put them together in a 20th/21st century
 publishing technology, namely a Flash interactive, and produced a work in which these detailed engravings of people, plants, animals, anatomical
diagrams and decorative letterforms animate, morph, and dissolve into one another in novel ways.

    The module is interactive in that it depends on you move your mouse around to find hot spots within each image tableaux, and click on them
to trigger animated sequences. Click, or re-click, on enough of them in a given image and you will trigger a progression to the next collage in the sequence.

    The piece is nicely done although it does require a bit of perseverance to get some of the screens to complete and move on to the next one.

    NFCTD is a wonderful diversion reminiscent of a cross between Max Earnst's classic Surrealist collage-novel Une Semaine du Bonté, from the
early 20th century, and the famous Nose Pilot Flash amusement that has been popular on the web for the last 8 or nine years. It presents an
 interesting juxtaposition of images, times, technologies and artistic visions.

    We met with Kertz in March at which time he estimated his system would be ready to
    go to market in the fourth quarter of '08 or the first quarter of '09.  Needless to say, I'm

    Kertz presents his concept very well, but there is a lot of proving up to be done.

    If he can reach his production goals, and if the price is economically realistic, we would like to be at the front of the line for his product.
    
    We have spoken with the marketing partners, they expect the price of a unit ( a unit is a one acre plant ) to range between half a
million and one million dollars.

    A unit is projected to produce somewhere near one hundred thousand gallons of algae oil per year.  So you would just scale it up to as
 many gallons of end product ( BioDiesel ) as you want to enter the marketplace with.

    We think five million gallons of BioDiesel per year would be the right starting point for Dade County Florida, with the potential to double
or quadruple production in future.  We know of forty million gallons per year in half a dozen industrial and institutional fleets in Dade County.

    Genetic research has shown that four genes involved in skin pigmentation have shown clear evidence of selection in Europeans (OCA2, MYO5A, DTNBP1, and TYRP1). Genetic studies show that the high frequencies of this variant allele in European populations may be associated with a substantial reduction in regional heterozygosity (Lamason et al., 2005; Soejima et al, 2006). This tends to tie in with other molecular genetic research that has shown Europeans to have among the worlds lowest levels of genetic variation which results in lower heterozygosity levels (Weber et al, 2002; Watkins et al 2003). Heterozygosity is thought to enhance resistance of hosts to infectious diseases, offers a greater degree of fitness for one or the other allele, and improves overall health (Gangestad & Buss 1993, Thornhill & Gangestad 1993). Reduced levels of genetic variation and heterozygosity have also been linked to lower reproductive and evolutionary fitness (Lacy 1987; Reed and Frankham, 2003).

    If you love turning heads when you take a ride around town, then the Ryno electric unicycle
     is probably for you. Designer Chris Hoffmann had his eyes set on the Segway crowd when he
    started work on the Ryno, and he has come up with quite the interesting looking one-wheeled
     auto. The cost for a pre-production Ryno is a whopping $25,000 and Hoffmann already has
    five orders, but he expects the market model to cost about $3,500. The production model will
     have a top speed of 25 mph, a range of up to 30 miles and an impressive 25-inch thick tire.

    Hoffman envisions his ride being used by patrolmen or guards who spend a lot of time walking
     back and forth over the same ground. Though Segways work fine, you?ve still got to stand up
    on them for your entire shift. The Ryno would just require you to do a bit of a balancing act
    while at work, and at least you get a seat. The sheer oddity of the thing might also be an
    asset, if thieves saw a patrolmen scooting around on one wheel late at night, they might be
     too stunned to try to break in. Hoffman doesn?t make pretenses that anyone is going to try
    to ride this guy as their sole mode of transportation and says on his website that it is a
    complement to whatever duel or quad-wheeled auto you already own.

    The folks over at Engadget had a chance to ride the Ryno and said that it was surprisingly
     sturdy ? thanks in large part to its very large tire. In the video above, the Ryno scoots
     around Pioneer Square in Portland, Oregon dodging pedestrians and parked cars like a pro.
     In addition to be electrically powered, this little guy uses a lot less materials than a
    Segway would, for starters it only has one wheel.

    Planar Energy has received the official confirmation of engineering samples performance from the University of Central Florida that verify the companys internal tests.  Scott Faris, President and CEO of Planar Energy says,  This fundamental materials breakthrough, coupled with our proprietary low-cost manufacturing process, will render traditional chemical batteries obsolete. Bold words . . .

    It will allow solid state battery fabrication that will enable manufacturers to increase their capacity by 200-to-300 percent, while reducing costs more than 50 percent. This is what the automotive industry needs to make electric vehicles practical and affordable, he continued.  There is meat on these bones.

    Planar Energy is a developer of large-format, solid-state batteries co-founded by Scott Faris, who is a serial entrepreneur, and Battelle Ventures in 2007 as a spin-out of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Planar?s products are based upon a portfolio of patents in the areas of materials deposition, new materials and battery design technologies.  This is not to be taken lightly.  It seems Planar Energy has developed a new generation of inorganic solid-state electrolyte and electrode materials along with a proprietary manufacturing process called Streaming Protocol for Electroless Electrochemical Deposition, or SPEED.

    Planar is describing SPEED as a low-cost, high-speed, roll-to-roll deposition process, which is significantly more flexible and scalable than existing deposition methods.  This eliminates the need for costly and time-consuming vacuum deposition usually required for inorganic films. It also produces energy storage films that are significantly superior to slurry and polymer-based films used in traditional chemical batteries.

    SPEED uses water-based precursors, allows for the direct growth of self-assembled films directly on flexible substrates or directly on top of other films. The film growth is done under ambient conditions and with growth rates exceeding 1 micron/minute over large surface areas. The SPEED-deposited films can range from single element films or complex inorganic chemistries with excellent stoichiometry. The process is compatible with a large array of known compound materials systems and it enables use of entirely new compound materials not workable in vacuum or slurry-coating processes. As an example, Planar Energys proprietary electrolytes are based upon unique chemistries that cannot be achieved in vacuum deposition.

    Here are the points noted in the letter provided for public release by University of Central Florids Advanced Materials Processing and Analysis Center (AMPAC):

        Planar Energy has identified a new class of solid-state electrolytes that have conductivity of 10-4 in measured samples and 10-3 in functional battery calculations. The conductivity ranges displayed allow for high-rate batteries required in automotive applications.
        Planar Energys solid-state electrolyte materials are deposited as thin films directly on active layers in the battery, eliminating the historic process of having to deposit films on separate substrates and then mechanically joining them.
        Planar Energys electrolytes demonstrate the same performance level of liquid electrolytes currently used by the lithium-ion industry, but they are in a solid form factor.
        Planar Energys change in form factor simplifies the battery manufacturing process and enables existing battery chemistries to function at 95% of their theoretical value.
        Planar Energys batteries will be intrinsically safe, allowing customers to further reduce packaging requirements, as well as simplify the battery management system.
        Planar Energys batteries have virtually no self-discharge, allowing them to sit for long periods of time while retaining their charge. Traditional lithium-ion batteries have high discharge rates that are problematic for automotive applications.

    This is an impressive listing.  While not directly addressing the 2 to 3 times the energy built at half the price, the technology transfer is yielding results.

    Notable in the industry is that Japanese firms have roll to roll production technology on line now, but not at the performance Planar is claiming.  The how looks fully doable.  Roll to roll techniques are gaining market share in solar panels as well.

    The questions are in the electrolytes, the connections, anode and cathode materials and designs and a host of construction matters over the course of building a battery.  That area is where the meaningful questions lay.

    If it all can go to scale, then the signaling to the market will have to crack the market itself wide enough for mass production. With Faris on board and a list of awards and acclaims, getting the attentions seems assured.

    Faris seems bent on getting to a 75% cost reduction with the 2 to 3 fold capacity increase.
     The capacity matter seems consistent across the limited and short period of online info
    this writer reviewed for back grounding this post.  That implies the materials involved
    are part of the original technology transfer.

    By any measure, if Planar and Faris can get production costs down 75%, it wont be
    hard to do marketing  Lots of work remains, building prototypes, testing, looking into
    any heat issues, getting cycling results, lifespan expectations, and identifying markets
    with needs.

    A lithium ion battery thats physically lighter by two thirds, offered at half or perhaps
    25% the price of competitive batteries bodes well for the firms chances  and much less
    expensive consumer products.

        @sophiastillhere I just recently got a new full time job programing home audio/video remotes and installing flat panel? tvs and stereo systems- I am making between $50 and $75 an hr. to do a job that- aside from mounting a tv bracket to the wall- is far less difficult than operating an Iphone. Americas priorities are so screwed up, soon well just be able to start stuffing people in little boxes w/ a computer and endless supply of fastfood.

    At the "nano tech 2007" event held from February 21 to 23, 2007, NEC Corp. presented an organic secondary battery embedded with an IC card and some other devices. The company strongly appealed to the audience by showing that the battery can light a white LED (light emitting diode) even when it is curved, while demonstrating a high-speed charge and a contactless charge of the battery.

    NEC displayed, among other items, a flexible cell and a card incorporating a thermo sensor and the aforesaid battery at its booth. Of the items on display, the thermo sensor card featuring a 6 mAh cell (an electrode measures 2.3 x 2.5 cm) can write measured temperature values every 2 seconds for 5 days (about 200,000 times), while the flexible cell with current capacity of 20 mAh is able to light the built-in 10 mA white LED for 2 hours, the company claims.

    The organic radical secondary battery's key feature is its high-speed charge that finishes in only 30 seconds using radical reaction instead of ion exchange. It uses PTVE (poly [4-vinyloxy-2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl]) organic radical material as the positive electrode activator, and its negative electrode seems to use metal lithium, which can make the thickness of an electrode thinner than the existing negative electrode material graphite. Dendrite may be viewed in metal lithium, which could lead to short-circuit between positive and negative electrodes, but very small capacity of a thin, micro cell, developed this time, appears to hardly cause a serious problem even if short-circuited.

    An NEC spokesperson cited as a challenge that lies ahead the battery's self-discharge, which is even larger than that of other secondary batteries, and said, "We will strive to lower its self-discharge to Ni-hydrogen secondary battery level." NEC aims to apply the organic radical battery for power supply of RFID cards, electronic paper and sensor networks, among others, according to the spokesperson.

    Paper-thin power for your gadgets will soon be a reality.

    Batteries may be the primary portable source preferred for our portable peripherals, but they're not what you'd call efficient. In fact, a significant percentage of a handheld gadget's weight is from its battery. NEC, a company known more for its monitors than alternative energy sources, has come up with a concept that plans to change everything.

    NEC has dubbed this latest project the ORB, or Organic Radical Battery. The latest prototype may not as paper-thin as the initial proof-of-concept they released five years ago, but at just over a quarter of an inch thick, it's still a lot leaner than most efficient current-generation power cells.

    The ORB can thank two things for its high power-to-weight ratio: its affordable carbon anodes, and its highly conductive nano-composite cathode. The latter is achieved by rendering an organic material into a gel, then impregnated with carbon materials. The one-two punch gives it a power output that's 40% higher than conventional batteries.

    It won't be replacing lithium-ions anytime soon, but at the very least the ORB can see future use in powering microcircuitry, implants, and tech-gear. Hey, it's better than using our own bodies as batteries, right? That's a robopocalypse waiting to happen.

    NEC first announced its super-thin Organic Radical Battery (or ORB) technology a full five years ago, but it's now finally back with what it describes as the first "practical" prototypes of the batteries. While these new batteries are about twice as thick as NEC's first such units, they're still only 0.7 mm thin, and are apparently much more reliable while also delivering 1.4 times more output (specifically, a capacity of 5mAh). The key to that boost, it seems, are some newly developed, highly conductive cathodes, which consists of some solid organic radical material that were turned into a gel and then uniformly compounded with carbon materials. What does that mean for actual consumers? Well, if NEC has its way, the batteries could be a thin, flexible power source for things like smart cards, wearable devices, and flexible e-paper displays.     NEC Develops Organic Radical Battery for Practical Use -- High performance battery compatible with IC Cards and wearable terminals

    Tokyo, November 5, 2010 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced today the development of a thin and flexible Organic Radical Battery (ORB) (*1) that is significantly more reliable and produces 1.4 times (*2) more output than existing units.

    These prototype ORB maintain nearly full capacity (*3), even after repeated charge-discharge, due to anodes that feature the same carbon material as lithium-ion batteries. The new ORB also produce 1.4 times more output than existing units due to the development of new highly conductive cathodes. Furthermore, these ORB are the size of a coin, 0.7 mm thin, and boast a capacity of 5mAh.

    The prototype ORB enables more than ten consecutive flash firings approximately twenty thousand times, and facilitates continuous high luminance LED flash emission, which is difficult to perform on compact double-layer capacitors. Moreover, the ORB is suitable for next-generation ubiquitous terminals that require flexibility and high output, including IC Cards, wearable terminals and flexible electronic paper.

    Characteristics of the technologies are as follows:

    1. Anodes made with carbon / high reliability
    ORB anodes feature the same carbon material used in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, rather than the thin metallic lithium film used with conventional ORB. As a result, the new ORB are approximately 1/10 the cost of existing units and exhibit comparable reliability to commercially available rechargeable lithium-ion batteries in repeated charge-discharge cycle testing (*4).

    2. 1.4 times higher output enabled through new composite cathodes
    A highly conductive nano-composite cathode was developed by converting solid organic radical material into a gel and uniformly compounding it with carbon materials. As a result, the output per battery with a capacity of 5mAh increased to 7kW/L, 1.4 times the level of conventional units.

    Research and development was partially carried out by the "Basic Technology Development for Fiber Materials Having Advanced Functions / Development of Battery Components to Enhance Performance and Functionality" project, sponsored by the Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry (METI), as well as the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).

    These technologies will be exhibited at NEC's "C&C User Forum & iEXPO 2010" held on 11 - 12 November 2010 at the Tokyo International Forum (Yurakucho).

    NEC has debuted some ultra-thin and flexible quick charging batteries named ORB,
    for Organic Radical Battery. We're having a hard time deciding what is the coolest
     part about these; their 0.3mm thickness that allows them to be flexible, or the
    fact that they can be recharged in about 30 seconds. The organic radical materials
     inside the battery are in an "electrolyte-permeated gel state," which is supposedly
     about halfway between a solid and a liquid. This helps ions make a smooth move
    (no, the other one), reducing resistance, allowing the batteries to charge faster.
     1 square centimeter will give you about 1 miliwatt hour. That's not enough to power
     your laptop, but according to NEC, one recharge of this battery allows an active
     RFID tag to transmit tens of thousands of signals. NEC plans on further developing
     the technology so it can one day be used in IC cards, RFID tags, electronic paper,
    wearable computers, and other such technologies stepping up to the plate in the
    coming decade.

    Organic Light Emitting DiodesOrganic Light-Emitting Diode technology, also
    abbreviated OLED, is relatively new but very promising, especially what concerns
     design of data display devices. OLEDs' main difference from other LEDs is that
    they are made of organic compounds which emit light in response to an electric current.
     This feature determines their main properties.OLEDs are made of special thin-film
     multilayer structures. These layers are special polymers. There is anode and cathode.
     Electrons can flow between them. When positive voltage is applied to the anode then
     electrons from the cathode start moving towards it. That means that the cathode emits
     them into the emissive layer while the anode gets them from a conductive layer. As the
     result of the flow of charged particles the layers acquire different charges. The
    emissive layer is charged negatively while holes appear in the conductive layer which
     charges positively. Under the influence of static electricity electrons and holes meet,
     and recombination occurs. A peculiar feature of organic matter is that the holes have
    greater mobility as compared with electrons. Thus recombination occurs closer to the
     emissive layer. Electrons' energy is decreasing which is accompanied by the emission
     of electromagnetic radiation into space in the form of a visible light.To improve the
     technology several of its aspects may be researched further. This can be the chemical
     composition of layers, enriching additive agents, and new studies in the field of
    organics. For each region of RGB spectrum experts look for necessary organic substances

    proportional to the applied voltage. This type of matrix is obsolete. It cannot be used
    in modern devices which produce big and high-quality image.In such case we use an
    active matrix. Each intersection of this matrix is connected with a control thin-film
     transistor. A signal is sent to it. It executes the command and maintains the specified
    level of glow till it receives new commands. This helps to save electricity. We also
    see that the screen has a higher response speed to the image change.OLED displays already
    have many advantages over regular LCD displays. They have lower energy consumption
    parameters, an improved colour rendition, immediate response time and no minimum visual
    angle. The image can be read from any angle. They also do not require any bias lighting
    and have a wide range of operating temperatures.The only disadvantage is their limited
    life span and expensive big matrices. That is why OLEDs are becoming more and more
    popular today as they are used in mobile phones, photo cameras, GPS navigators, and
    other electronic appliances which require a high-quality colourful display of data on
     average-size screens that do not require continuous work.Besides, there are technologies
     which are based on OLED and allow to make transparent displays (TOLED technology) or
    even flexible displays (FOLED).Thus organic light-emitting diodes have a very promising
     future. There are numerous studies being conducted now, and no doubt that OLED display
     properties will be improving. And we can expect new high-tech devices soon.

They hate them because dollar for dollar they are more expensive than a PC less customisable and most mac owners are smug little pricks that believe they can't get viruses. You know why Macs have very few known viruses it is? because they only have 10% of the PC market if they had more and were a better target for hackers and coders there would be more viruses simple as that.

        @chaoshawk69 Also, mac osx can open up pdf, office documents without downloading extra softwares from the internet, java is even built in mac osx. I mean, every time I see the fucking registry in Windows makes me rage because that is the worst design? Windows have. Btw, I have a PC with i7 12g ram and crossfire 6950(mainly to play BF3). I bought a macbook air mainly because it is light, thin and small. I bring it with me everyday because I do all my Unix shell programming and Java programming on Mac osx, because osx has built? in Shell (terminal) which I don't have to remote connect to unix server to do some scripts and file management through terminal.

    Power from motion and vibrations
    Forget about batteries.
    

    The ability to harness electricity from tiny vibrations could power a new generation
    of electronic devices.

    This is the second of a series about MIT research on harnessing micro-sources of power
    (part one can be read here).

    The Trans-Alaska Pipeline System, which traverses hundreds of miles of some of the most inhospitable terrain on Earth,
    must be monitored almost constantly for potential problems like corrosion or cracking. Humans do some of this work
    surveying the pipeline from the air and inspecting it more closely in the areas that can be easily accessed by roads
    but the bulk of it is done by mechanical "pigs," sensor-laden robots that travel inside the pipeline looking for flaws.
    A simpler process might involve outfitting remote stretches of the pipeline with sensors that would automatically radio
    a warning of impending problems. But the need to periodically change the batteries on! such sensors lessens the appeal
    of that option. For electronic devices in remote or inaccessible situations like this, including environmental or
    mechanical monitoring sensors as well as some kinds of biomedical monitors, it can be inconvenient or even impossible
    to replace batteries.

    But what if batteries weren't necessary?

    Systems that could provide power for such sensors just by harvesting the normal vibrations of the pipeline
    (or bridges or industrial machinery and so on), eliminating or reducing the need for a battery, are being developed
    by Anantha Chandrakasan, MIT's Joseph F. and Nancy P. Keithley professor of electrical engineering and director of
    the MIT Microsystems Technology Laboratories, and his former student Yogesh Ramadass SM '06, PhD '09.

    They have been working for years on the development of ways to harness small amounts of power from ambient vibrations.

    A paper describing their latest work on a new control circuit for such systems, which can quadruple the amount of
    power they produce, appeared last month in the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits.
    

    Big steps toward tiny power There are a number of different approaches to harnessing vibrational energy, some using
    magnetic or electric fields. But the new control circuit Ramadass and Chandrakasan developed is designed to work
    with piezoelectric systems ? ones that use voltage generated by stress in a crystalline material, such as
    lead-zirconate-titanate.

    It has been known for well over a century that some materials, including some crystals and ceramics, will produce
    an electrical current when subjected to stress by squeezing or bending. To harness the energy of motion or vibration,
    such a material is coupled to a spring, pendulum or other mechanism that converts the motion into pressure.
    Chandrakasan and Ramadass envision applications in such things as implantable medical diagnostic or treatment devices
    that could be powered indefi! nitely by the person's own natural movements, or distributed sensors to monitor
    structural elements on bridges or the pressure in truck tires and transmit the data to a central receiver, powered
    by the vibrations of ordinary traffic.

    Existing devices for harvesting energy from vibrations tend to be tuned to very specific frequencies, Chandrakasan
    says, but "in many practical applications, we need something more general.
    

    That's still a technical question to be addressed."

    For now, such systems can't deliver enough power to run consumer devices such as cell phones, Ramadass explains.

    
    "The power levels for a cell phone are way up from what we can generate now" from a person's natural movements,
    he says, although some simpler devices, such as an mp3 music player, might be within the available range.

    
    He is currently working with semiconductor leader Texas Instruments to develop commercial applications of
    ultra-low power systems and solutions.
    

    David Lamb, chief operating officer of Camgian Microsystems, a company that produces a variety of low-power,
    lightweight semiconductor chips, says enabling new, low-power distributed sensor and security systems will depend
    on improving the efficiency of energy-harvesting techniques, including the power-producing system as well as control
    and storage systems.
    

    Because low-power systems are still a relatively new area of research, he says, "typical power management approaches
    are not well suited to energy harvesters, and there are still a lot of unsolved challenges," But devices such as the
    company's remote surveillance system are designed to operate on very low power, he says, and "if efficient interface
    and control circuits can be developed, this microsystem can be continuously powered by energy harvesting."
    

    The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has provided support for this research, which also holds
    promise for monitoring military equipment in remote locations.
    

    The team has also been developing systems to derive small amounts of power from temperature differences
    (as described in part one of this series), and Chandrakasan says that in the future, some applications might make
    use of systems that combine both the heat- and vibration-harvesting devices to produce more power, or to work in
    situations where these energy sources are variable and one or the other might not always be available.
    
    
    

    Some parts of such a system, such as the electronic control circuits and transmitters for relaying the collected
    data, could be connected to both the heat and vibration generating systems (as well as additional sources of power,
    such as a solar cell), Ramadass says. "You could have one set of electronics that interfaces" with multiple inputs,
    he says.

    For the future, the researchers are working on ways to improve the integration of the various components, and on
    making the systems as versatile as possible. "We want to make them adaptable over a broad range" of operating
    conditions, Chandrakasan says.
    
    

    In addition, they are working on improving the devices' overall efficiency.

    
    "We want to get to the maximum theoretically possible achievable energy," Ramadass says.
