DVDs Are The New Betamax. http://www.ehowa.com/2011/01/14/ Ten years ago if you'd have told me I could buy a TWO FUCKING TERABYTE DRIVE for under a hundred bucks, I'd have called you a liar. but here I am, proud new owner of 2,048,000,000,000 bytes of storage in exchange for a Benjamin, a Lincoln, and a Washington. So now what I'm doing is ripping all of my DVDs to this hard drive. And then with this new drive plugged into the back of the PC I'm using for Hulu/Netflix, all of my movies will be no more than a few mouse clicks away. This of course opposed to the previous method of fishing around through all two hundred movies (which refuse to remain in alphabetical order despite my best efforts), finding the right goddamn case only to open it to discover the wrong disc inside. So yeah, this is going to be much nicer. And before you ask, I'm using DVD Decrypter to do the actual rip of the DVD. This step takes anywhere from 12-20 minutes depending on how fast your DVD drive is, and the resulting ISO files are around 6 gigs each. Then I use Hand Brake on the ISO files to do the final encoding of the movie to an .MP4 file. This step is completely 100% processor dependant -- the faster your CPU the faster the encoding goes. I have an eh-so-so middle of the road Intel Core i5 750 @ 2.67GHz and it takes my machine about 15 minutes per movie. For shits and grins, I tried it on an older AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6000+ and it took 1 hour and 17 minutes! Yikes! Anyway, once that second step is done, the ISO files can then be deleted so they're not wasting drive space. In MP4 format, each movie is averaging a little over 1 gigabyte each - meaning I'll be able to fit roughly two thousand movies on this drive. The image quality is about the same as a standard DVD player, which isn't to say it's horrible but it's not quite as a pretty as upscaling progressive scan DVD player. but for the convenience, you can't beat it. Next step: ripping my Blu-Rays. http://www.ehowa.com/2011/01/14/

The FDA’s current food safety czar is a yet another old, rich, white guy. His name is Taylor and for ten years he was a lawyer representing agribusiness giant Monsanto. Learn about him here.http://current.com/news/92009377_obama-appoints-monsanto-man-as-fda-food-safety-czar.htm

source: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/13/AR2010011304402.html?hpid=se... http://current.com/15pk44c By Lyndsey Layton Washington Post Staff Writer Thursday, January 14, 2010
A year ago, Michael Taylor was sitting in his office at George Washington University, considering a basic mission of the federal government: making sure food is safe. He'd devoted his career to food safety, working in and out of government, and he was finally in academia where he could think deeply about what was wrong and how to fix it.
Monsanto developed genetically engineered corn, genetically engineered soybeans, and invented bovine growth hormone. Taylor was instrumental in getting growth hormone approved for use in cattle.
Now his job is to protect my food. New FDA deputy to lead food-safety mandate
With all due respect, blow me. All of you anons who are freaking out about me being mean to the precious manufactured food industry should crawl back to your cubicles and resume your naive, conformist thinking. Go ahead and believe that giant corporations who essentially regulate themselves are being honest with you. http://early-onset-of-night.tumblr.com/post/1235437257/the-poultry-industry-should-file-liable-against-you

Despite seeing the horrors of the fast food industry in “Food Inc” and “Fast Food Nation,” we must admit that once in a very great while, we say “F**k it,” and stuff our face with a Big Mac while forcing ourselves to think of happy images of unicorns and dancing polar bears—anything but processed meat and slaughterhouses. But after learning about the following, we think even the annual Micky D’s trip will have to come to an end. The above picture is what your raw chicken nuggets look like. And as if it wasn’t gross enough that the goo looks like strawberry ice cream, we then learned this:
* The substance is called MSC, or mechanically separated chicken * It’s a sickening puree of the ENTIRE chicken including bones, eyes, feet, everything * It’s then treated with ammonia to destroy bacteria, and then because it tastes so bad, is mixed with artificial flavoring And then dyed pink
Sorry if that ruined your Monday. [Village Voice] http://blogs.villagevoice.com/forkintheroad/2010/10/do_you_know_wha.php

Anachronous discovery: Swiss watch in ancient tomb Archeologists in China got shocked after finding a tiny Swiss watch in a 400-year-old tomb. The watch ring was discovered when archeologists were making a documentary with two journalists from Shangsi town. According to Archeologist "When we tried to remove the soil wrapped around the coffin, a piece of rock suddenly dropped off and hit the ground with a metallic sound? "We picked up the object, and found it was a ring. After removing the covering soil and examining it further, we were shocked to see it was a watch." The time was stopped at 10:06 am, and on the back was engraved the word "Swiss". Local experts say they are confused as they believe the tomb had been undisturbed since it was created during the Ming dynasty 400 years ago. They have suspended the dig and are waiting for experts to arrive from Beijing and help them unravel the mystery.

Vacuum Tubes may have been a cornerstone in developing electronics, but for our purposes here, they make a sweet chess board. The “Chess Set For Tesla,” by Paul Fryer, uses 32 vacuum tubes and 64 plugs to ensure that those pieces don’t tip over during play. And of course, they light up, sohwing the type of piece on top. As some Dvice commenters noted, this is probably an impractical board, as the tubes would likely get too hot to handle unless you’re playing in the northern reaches of Russia. That doesn’t make it any less awesome from afar. February 9, 2009 Art & Literature Top 10 Most Overrated Novels 928 Comments Share
[COMPETITION: This list includes a competition.] There are many titles given to great literary works, and many awards to recognize truly great literature. This list wants to concentrate on the other side of the board: those books that are considered “classics,” but are in fact heavily overrated. These could be wildly popular books that were best sellers, but just weren’t that good, or books that are considered “among the best ever” by academics but fail as being readable or good literature beyond some fancy literary trick. In at least one case (see #10), this list also includes good books that are fun reads, but are rated way above the actual quality of writing. Here is the list of ten of the most overrated novels: 10 The Lord of the Rings Trilogy J.R.R. Tolkien
Lordoftherings
What better way to start a list than with controversy? “The Lord of the Rings” remains a cornerstone of the fantasy adventure genre, and the story is certainly epic. That being said, Tolkien was more of a professor and creative inventor than a writer, and that shows in these books. “The Hobbit” was by far and away the best written of all his works, and while the story from “The Lord of the Rings” is excellent and ambitious, the writing itself leaves a lot to be desired. There are the wandering plots, the many pages of details that are completely superfluous, and the often occurrence of “dues ex machine” to keep the plot moving. The story may be good, but for a series often considered one of the best of all time, the writing itself won’t measure up to that lofty praise.
Buy at Amazon: The Lord of the Rings: 50th Anniversary, One Vol. Edition
9 A Passage to India E.M. Forster
511Bmev3Bgl
“A Passage to India,” is widely considered E.M. Forster’s best novel, and is still popular in academe. It is often hailed as an early radical work on race relations that was shocking at the time. Modern critics point out that as opposed to Hemingway, Joyce, Huxley, Sinclair Lewis, or other authors whose works are still popular outside of academic study, Forster’s characters sound like wooden caricatures. The writing is dated and slow, the “social commentary” questionable, and the Indian natives in this novel don’t seem that much different than the Brits, dulling it of the impact that the writers of the Harlem Renaissance had. These critics all have very valid points.
Buy at Amazon: A Passage to India (Penguin Classics) 8 White Noise & Underworld Don Delillo
Whitenoise Uk 2005
This is a two for one deal. Don Delillo is absolutely adored by many English professors. His works are equally despised by many grad students and other English professors. These works seem to find the far majority of their fans among professors, while the common readers aren’t biting. Add the fact that just as many professors seem indifferent to these works, and Delillo can be considered badly overrated.
Buy at Amazon: White Noise (Penguin Great Books of the 20th Century) 7 Atlas Shrugged Ayn Rand
Atlas Shrugged Cover
Ayn Rand might be the most divisive author not named L. Ron Hubbard. There’s also the chance she is just as divisive. While often pointed out as one of Rand’s “epic” works, “Atlas Shrugged” is a slow paced, thinly veiled, political and moral treatise whose hype is so far beyond the quality of the story that there was no way this book could avoid this list – even if it was generally considered a quality read by the majority of readers. [JFrater: you can't say we don't allow different opinions to have a voice on this site: this is one of my favorite books!]
Buy at Amazon: Atlas Shrugged (Centennial Ed. HC) 6 One Hundred Years of Solitude Gabriel García Márquez
0060929790.01.Lzzzzzzz
“A Brief History of Time” by Stephen Hawking was nicknamed “The unread best seller,” by many critics who noted it was a best seller, but very few people actually read past the first few chapters. “100 Years” is the fictional equivalent. This is considered a genius work that is incredibly complex and ushered in magical realism as a genre, but when you need cliff notes as extensive as the book itself to kind of understand the plot, and this book is kept alive mostly by being taught in colleges, you have a problem. For a book that is almost a lock to be on any “100 best books ever” list, it is amazingly unreadable if you need to actually understand what’s going on.
Buy at Amazon: One Hundred Years of Solitude (P.S.)
5 The Da Vinci Code Dan Brown
0385504209.01. Sclzzzzzzz
This is a book loved by the masses, and isn’t thought of well at all by literature majors or professors. A lot of basic facts are wrong, the writing is poor and amateurish, the narrator mixes with the main character’s point of view, and there’s a lot of thinly veiled social opinions pushed forward as facts. Why is this novel not the most overrated of all time? Because a lot of readers already recognize this for what it is: a story with enough controversial elements and a good marketing gig to hit the best seller list, but a work that was not very well written at all, and a story with a ton of holes in it.
Buy at Amazon: The Da Vinci Code 4 Confederacy of Dunces John Kennedy Toole
Dunces
The story behind this novel is fascinating: the author commits suicide after failing to find a publisher and ten years later the novel is published and wins the Pulitzer Prize. This is a story that is a somewhat modern and Americanized “Don Quixote.” The writing is fairly good, but this is a “funny” story that does enough to get an occasional smirk, but also throws out thirty jokes that just don’t do it. Following that, this book breaks one of the cardinal rules of literature: if you’re following one character as the ‘hero,’ he has to be someone the reader likes, or can at least sympathize with. This book is an acceptable read, but its reputation now grossly exceeds its actual quality.
Buy at Amazon: A Confederacy of Dunces 3 The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald
Greatgatsby
This book went out of print for nearly three decades. Yeah, Fitzgerald was that important. Then almost thirty years after the rest of the world moved on, two professors wrote a ton of academic papers about Fitzgerald’s “brilliance” in the 1960's and this book was put back into print to be taught in every high school in the nation. You can almost hear the recurring groans of every student who has ever wondered how this lame rehashed soap opera was ever brought out of printing banishment.
Buy at Amazon: The Great Gatsby 2 Wuthering Heights Emily Bronte
014043418601Lzzzzzzz2
This book is a classic because… well… there doesn’t seem to be much explanation for that. This was a highly ambitious book, and the Brontes did make a name for women authors, but just because a book was ground breaking at the time doesn’t mean it should remain a classic. Some books are horribly dated, badly structured, and not even all ground breaking books are well written. Many argue that “Wuthering Heights” is guilty of all three literary sins, and this novel’s extremely high place in the literary canon makes it number two on the overrated list.
Buy at Amazon: Wuthering Heights (Penguin Popular Classics) 1 Emma Jane Austen
Austen Emma
Say what you will, but any book where pretty much nothing happens for 400 pages before the naïve girl suddenly matures and marries the much older man named “Mr. Knightly” (and lives happily ever after) should not be considered the greatest book ever. Through colleges and grad schools, many students have heard this book repeatedly called the perfect novel, the perfect plot, and the best novel ever written. It may have been ground breaking at the time, but it is now the equivalent of chick lit with a very basic plot that is heavily dated. It might be light summer reading for teenage girls, but it is not the best novel ever written by a long shot, making this the most overrated novel of all time.

New York, NY (Rotters) - Ever since being fingered by George W. Bush as the favored presidential election opponent for the Republican Party in 2008, Senator Clinton has been met with a withering disinformation campaign from the bowels of what some describe as the vast right-wing conspiracy. At issue most recently was a very unflattering and supposedly candid snapshot of the New York senator greeting people upon her arrival for President Bush's State of the Union address to Congress. The photo has been circulated throughout the United States and indeed the world, and is currently on Yahoo's list of most e-mailed photographs.

Rotters reporters have discovered the original electronic versions of the photograph in question, and the conclusion among renowned experts is that indeed the photograph being circulated throughout the press has been doctored, or "photoshopped". "Photoshopping" is the current term from the world of blogging in which a photo is altered electronically to produce humorous or compromising results for the victim. "The sad thing," stated photography expert Paul O. Reud, "is that this is not even a very well done job. It's obviously done by a somewhat skilled but rank amateur with no concepts for lighting, shading, or human anatomy. Technology has advanced to the point that some very powerful tools are now placed in the hands of decidedly partisan hacks" http://www.dudehisattva.com/2006_archive.htm
01/30/08 Giuliani Drops Bid, Pledges Connections to McCain

http://www.dudehisattva.com/index.html
Miami, FL (APE) - Former New York Mayor , and former GOP Republican presidential candidate front-runner Rudy Giuliani last night announced that he would be dropping his run for the presidency after a humiliating third-place finish in Florida, the only state in which he actively campaigned. Giuliani seemed to run solely on his popularity as mayor of New York City during the time of the 9/11 attacks. Critics are left to ponder whether his defeat occurred because of his own self-destruction or if the American public has finally chosen to bury the past of 9/11 and move on.
Giuliani was dogged throughout his campaign by charges of improprieties, corruption, and strong-arm techniques. He was famously exposed as bilking the city of New York for expenses and security during trysts with his former mistress and now wife. His former police chief, Bernard Kerik, whom Giuliani had once highly recommended to the Bush administration as a potential director of homeland security, was also indicted on corruption charges."One man's character flaw is another man's leadership skill," dismissed a former Giuliani campaign worker.
The Giuliani campaign stated that he would now begin utilizing extensive connections and calling in favors for Arizona Senator John McCain's presidential campaign. "He'll do whatever it takes to put John McCain in the White House... it will be an offer that America can't refuse" stated a campaign official.
McCain officials stated that Guiliani' s entire Florida fundraising operation had been bundled aboard the "straight talk" express and, provided there was no interstate police interference, would travel to the next McCain campaign stop, hoping to scare up the funds to make him competitive. http://www.dudehisattva.com/index.html

'Tis the season of the Scots. "A Man's a Man, for 'A That," for a Christmas ditty;
and this pleasant card for the turning of the year
and a codger singing of liberty - a theme for all epochs -
and today arrives a New Year's greeting from a correspondent:
____________________________________________
(forward)
Dear Friends,
Now I know I sent this very version of this song* out to you all last New Year's Eve but, you must admit, it's a gorgeous recording, sung by Scottish folk singer Mairi Campbell. This year, I had the great pleasure of spending a couple of weeks in Scotland and thought I'd share a little end-of-year trivia with you about this, a most famous Scottish tune.
As you all know, the song is called Auld Lang Syne, translated into English literally as "old long since", or to the good ol' days, if you will. It was originally a poem written by Robert Burns in 1788 and set to the tune of a traditional folk song. In Scotland, in addition to Hogmanay (Scottish name for New Year's Eve), it is also sung on Burns Night, January 25th, to celebrate the life of the famous author and poet. I've included a copy of the original lyrics at the very bottom of this email.
Some countries that sing Auld Lang Syne at midnight on New Year's day include the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Hong Kong, Singapore, India and Pakistan. In other countries, it is sung in different occasions. In Brazil, Portugal, France, Spain, Greece, Poland, and Germany, this song is used to mark a farewell. The tune of the song is another story. The melody alone is being used in different contexts all over the world. In the US, it is used as a song of remembrance during 9-11 memorials and other memorial events. A pub variation of the song is a very popular one too, and is sung in pubs across Scotland, England, and the US.
The Canadian band leader Guy Lombardo is often credited with popularising the use of the song at New Year’s celebrations in America, through his annual broadcasts on radio and television recorded this sentimental favorite version in 1939, though he began the tradition of playing it in 1929.
So for all of you who put up with my emails throughout the year, I wish a hopping fun Dick Clark of a 2011. I wish you health, wealth, happiness and security, wherever you are. And clink your glasses for me at your stroke of midnight and kiss the ones you love smack on the lips.
Cheers everyone
sung by Mairi Campbell; lovely
Robert Burns’ original Scots verse
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne* ?
CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my jo,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp !
and surely I’ll be mine !
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
CHORUS
We twa hae run about the braes,
and pu’d the gowans fine ;
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit,
sin auld lang syne.
CHORUS
We twa hae paidl’d i' the burn,
frae morning sun till dine ;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
sin auld lang syne.
CHORUS
And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere !
and gie's a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll tak a right gude-willy waught,
for auld lang syne.
CHORUS

This film by Tom Van Overberghe examines the life and contributions of legendary pianist Mal Waldron. In addition to boasting a recording career featuring many influential records under his own name, he has been a composer for film, accompanist to some of the most important jazz musicians and singers (including Billie Holiday, Abbey Lincoln, Eric Dolphy, Booker Ervin, Thad Jones, and Jackie McLean to name a few), and an activist leader. This engaging film also features footage of Max Roach, Steve Lacy, Jeanne Lee, Andrew Cyrille, and Reggie Workman. The great Eric Dolphy recorded several albums for the Candid label as a sideman including dates with bassist Charles Mingus, trumpeter Booker Little, singer Abbey Lincoln and the Newport Rebels. This CD features eight alternate takes from these sessions, six of which were previously unissued. "Reincarnation of a Love Bird" and "Stormy Weather" are with Mingus in a group also featuring trumpeter Ted Curson, two numbers have vocals by Abbey Lincoln (Coleman Hawkins is heard from on "African Lady"), Dolphy is matched wtih trombonist Jimmy Knepper and the veteran trumpeter Roy Eldridge on "Body and Soul," and he proves to be a perfect partner of Booker Little in a sextet. Even the "complete" box sets that have been issued of these sessions do not include all of this music, which in general is up to the level of the originally-issued versions. Eric Dolphy. Charles Mingus. Abbey Lincoln. Coleman Hawkins. Max Roach. Booker Little. Roy Eldridge. Tommy Flanagan. Jo Jones.

.: Valeri Dimchev
These excellent musicians and composers convince me that there are many people in the west, which will enjoy this unique and refreshing Bulgarian jazz/folk music. Kári Sverrisson, National Faroese Broadcasting Corporation, Faroe Islands (Denmark)
Dimchev, though is a progressive; some of the tunes of his recital were closer to jazz than to tradition. The tamboura is a string instrument with a teardrop body and a long neck, and, in Dimchev's hands, is capable of great subtlety Ed Ward, Wall Street Journal (USA)
Dimchev's own tamboura and Anton Apostolov's guitar kept us quiet, intricate but mesmerizing focus for much of the opening set, occasionally broken with the beautiful, mournful tone of Desislava Dimcheva's vocals. Roger Levesque, Edmonton Journal (Canada)
Valeri Dimchev was born in 1963 in the town Blagoevgrad, south-west Bulgaria. He studied tamboura in the Folk Music school in Shiroka luka and AMTII Music Academy in Plovdiv. During his studying in the university, Valeri Dimchev played with the famous wedding orchestra “Orpheus” with the violinist Georgi Yanev. After coming back to his home place – Blagoevgrad, he formed his own group. Later the vocal Desislava Dimcheva joined.
The constant search of new ideas, styles and experiments shapes the image of the group. What characterizes the music of the trio, is the link with the intonation and rhythmic traditions of Bulgarian folklore, typical unequal rhythms 7/8, 9/8, 11/8, etc., together with traditional instruments (tamboura, tarambuka, folk singing).
Keeping the unique style of its music the trio has released several albums in Bulgaria, Europe, and North America.
Valeri Dimche Trio has been touring in Europe, North America, Asia – France, Denmark, Faroe Islands, Czech Republic, Norway, Germany, Canada, Republic of Makedonija, Malaysia having live performances as concerts, festivals and workshops with Bulgarian music.

From a musical point of view, there is no other band like them in Bulgaria. Toma Sprostranov, Bulgarian National Radio (Bulgaria)
Lot Lorien are a talented group of musicians. Peter Baker - Project Coordinator, Real World Records (UK)
Very good structural synthesis of contemporary and medieval music, described as modern 'world music. Helen Kim , Korea Herald (South Korea)
The most interesting modern Balkan music I ever heard. Pavel Komarov, Moskovskii Komsomolec (Russia)
The band came into existence in 1998 and has been continually developing a sound that has no equivalent in the world. The creators of the band, Kiril Georgiev and Zlatomir Valchev, were inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's books and through his works came the name of the group. Lot Lorien's compositions, both the original music and interpretations of some traditional songs, combine elements from Bulgarian, Balkan and world folklore. By presenting traditional music in a contemporary format the band makes it more accessible to people from all around the world. The sound is further enhanced by the use of standard and non-standard instrumentation, such as acoustic guitar, bass, violin, female vocal, drums, percussion, glockenspiel, tapan, djembe, darbouka and others. The band has performed many concerts and festivals around the world in such locales as Bulgaria, Italy, the Russian Federation, Pakistan, Turkey, Poland, Slovenia, Finland, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Romania, South Korea, Serbia, the Republic of Macedonia and Croatia.
The group has 3 albums and now prepare a new one.

=======================
At the age of 13 he started to study zither playing by Ladislav Argus Rysavy in Varnsdorf. He was the one who developed Michal's great relation to this nearly forgotten instrument using the very natural teaching methods. After the graduation exam (1995) Michal left to Vienna to study by the professor Mrs. Hannelore Laister . He had been preparing himself at the music school for two years and afterwards he began to study the classic zither at the Conservatory of Vienna. He graduated in 2001 and returned back to the Czech Republic.
Michal Muller is presently the only educated zither player and the teacher of the concert zither in the Czech Republic. He belongs to the most progressive zither players of the world. As the solo player is Michal most popular for his personal expression and approach to the instrument. He plays classical music, but mostly his own pieces that is based on folk motives, as well as on blues, jazz, world music and free improvisation. He cooperates with the musicians of the different music genres, he improvises with expressive dancers and poets, writes music for movies... He also arranges compositions for zither. In music he prefers free realization and opportunity to show his individuality. He sings very often too. "Zither is simply my own instrument through I can express myself, through I can speak like with my tongue." As the teacher he lectures the concert zither seminars in Germany, Austria, Slovenia and also in the Czech Republic.

The likes of I’m a Celebrity and Celebrity Big Brother, along with lesser rivals CelebAir and Celebrity Scissorhands, remind us what happens to those washed up once-were-gonna-bes who were once instantly recognisable before fashions and our memories move on.
David VD from this year’s jungle experiment is the perfect example. The man is a bizarre, plasticated nobody who is convinced he’s somebody. His gnashing white teeth and blonde highlights give him the false impression that he still counts. He’s firmly of the impression that it wouldn’t take a forceful nudge, a rummage through wikipedia or a blow to the head for Joe Public to have any recall on who he is. Or was. We had, quite simply, forgotten he existed…
But now we have the internet, IMDB and the aforementioned Wikipedia we are empowered. We CAN find out where these barely remembered TV-folk have got to. We don’t need I’m a Celebrity or any of these piss-poor vehicles – all we need is the power of our memories to recall them and then we can google about instead of doing any work until we have their entire working history before our eyes.
Case Study 1:

Tinker out of Lovejoy
Poor Old Tinker had a sinister face and white hair like an evil gremlin. Whenever he came onscreen, children shrieked and tiny underpants throughout the nation were soiled with screamer-shits and worried piss. But where is Tinker now?
Just a cursory glance over IMDB shows me that Tinker’s been a busy bastard doing the compulsory stints in Emmerdale, Casualty and The Bill, etc… but was also, presumably, Danny Dyer’s Dad in the Football Factory – literally one of the worst films I’ve seen! Dudley Sutton (that’s his real name) was also Wilfred in Eastenders, latterly. Weirdly, I seem to have blanked this from my mind. He’ll always be Tinker to me.
