Image: Adeen Flinker, UC Berkeley Neuroscientists may one day be able to hear the imagined speech of a patient unable to speak due to stroke or paralysis, according to Univ. of California, Berkeley, researchers.
These scientists have succeeded in decoding electrical activity in the brain’s temporal lobe – the seat of the auditory system – as a person listens to normal conversation. Based on this correlation between sound and brain activity, they then were able to predict the words the person had heard solely from the temporal lobe activity.
“This research is based on sounds a person actually hears, but to use it for reconstructing imagined conversations, these principles would have to apply to someone’s internal verbalizations,” cautioned first author Brian Pasley, a post-doctoral researcher in the center. “There is some evidence that hearing the sound and imagining the sound activate similar areas of the brain. If you can understand the relationship well enough between the brain recordings and sound, you could either synthesize the actual sound a person is thinking, or just write out the words with a type of interface device.”
“This is huge for patients who have damage to their speech mechanisms because of a stroke or Lou Gehrig’s disease and can’t speak,” says co-author Robert Knight, a UC Berkeley professor of psychology and neuroscience. “If you could eventually reconstruct imagined conversations from brain activity, thousands of people could benefit.”
In addition to the potential for expanding the communication ability of the severely disabled, he noted, the research also “is telling us a lot about how the brain in normal people represents and processes speech sounds.”
Pasley and his colleagues at UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco, Univ. of Maryland and The Johns Hopkins Univ. report their findings in the open-access journal PLoS Biology.
Help from epilepsy patients They enlisted the help of people undergoing brain surgery to determine the location of intractable seizures so
that the area can be removed in a second surgery. Neurosurgeons typically cut a hole in the skull and safely place electrodes on the brain
surface or cortex – in this case, up to 256 electrodes covering the temporal lobe – to record activity over a period of a week to pinpoint the
seizures. For this study, 15 neurosurgical patients volunteered to participate.
Pasley visited each person in the hospital to record the brain activity detected by the electrodes as they heard 5-10 minutes of conversation.
Pasley used this data to reconstruct and play back the sounds the patients heard. He was able to do this because there is evidence that the brain breaks down sound into its component acoustic frequencies – for example, between a low of about 1 Hertz (cycles per second)
to a high of about 8,000 Hertz – that are important for speech sounds.
Pasley tested two different computational models to match spoken sounds to the pattern of activity in the electrodes. The patients then heard a single word, and Pasley used the models to predict the word based on electrode recordings.
“We are looking at which cortical sites are increasing activity at particular acoustic frequencies, and from that, we map back to the sound,” Pasley says. He compared the technique to a pianist who knows the sounds of the keys so well that she can look at the keys another pianist is playing in a sound-proof room and “hear” the music, much as Ludwig van Beethoven was able to “hear” his compositions despite
being deaf.
The better of the two methods was able to reproduce a sound close enough to the original word for Pasley and his fellow researchers to correctly guess the word.
“We think we would be more accurate with an hour of listening and recording and then repeating the word many times,” Pasley says.
But because any realistic device would need to accurately identify words heard the first time, he decided to test the models using only
a single trial.
“This research is a major step toward understanding what features of speech are represented in the human brain” Knight says.
“Brian’s analysis can reproduce the sound the patient heard, and you can actually recognize the word, although not at a perfect level.”
Knight predicts that this success can be extended to imagined, internal verbalizations, because scientific studies have shown that when people are asked to imagine speaking a word, similar brain regions are activated as when the person actually utters the word.
“With neuroprosthetics, people have shown that it’s possible to control movement with brain activity,” Knight says. “But that work,
while not easy, is relatively simple compared to reconstructing language. This experiment takes that earlier work to a whole new level.”
Based on earlier work with ferrets The current research builds on work by other researchers about how animals encode sounds in the brain’s auditory cortex. In fact, some researchers, including the study’s coauthors at the Univ. of Maryland, have been able to guess the words ferrets were read by scientists based on recordings from the brain, even though the ferrets were unable to understand the words.
The ultimate goal of the UC Berkeley study was to explore how the human brain encodes speech and determine which aspects of
speech are most important for understanding.
“At some point, the brain has to extract away all that auditory information and just map it onto a word, since we can understand
speech and words regardless of how they sound,” Pasley says. “The big question is, What is the most meaningful unit of speech? A syllable, a phone, a phoneme? We can test these hypotheses using the data we get from these recordings.”

Humboldt Foundation.

Contact lenses are currently being developed that could improve ability to use tiny portable displays while sill interacting with the surrounding environment. Image: DARPA
Currently being developed by DARPA researchers at Washington-based Innovega iOptiks are contact lenses that enhance normal vision by allowing a wearer to view virtual and augmented reality images without the need for bulky apparatus. Instead of oversized virtual reality helmets, digital images are projected onto tiny full-color displays that are very near the eye. These novel contact lenses allow users to focus simultaneously on objects that are close up and far away. This could improve ability to use tiny portable displays while sill interacting with the surrounding environment.
Developed as part of DARPA’s Soldier Centric Imaging via Computational Cameras (SCENICC) program, SCENICC’s objective is to eliminate the ISR capability gap that exists at the individual Soldier level. The program seeks to develop novel computational imaging capabilities and explore joint design of hardware and software that give warfighters access to systems that greatly enhance their awareness, security and survivability.

My nephew, Angel has been working as a free lance photographer for the last two years and suggested me to bring at least four large paintings in to his studio, on the subject of the females form, so he could use them as a background for a model while I did body paint designs similar to the lines on some of my paintings. He was able to complete a portfolio for a special project he was trying to put together. We got together on Friday, June 19th of 2009 at 10:00 am over to his studio located at a nice apartment complex.
We begun work soon after getting everything set up. I brought my camera, so that from time to time either my nephew or his cousin would assist me in the making of a video of the body paint in process. I have previously done several body paints and none were properly recorded on video like this big effort I finally put together with their help. It was not easy to work on the body of this young woman while making sure that the improvise camera guy was working out interesting visual shots of what I was being done. In some instances I had to force to take the camera on one hand while holding a bush on the other one. This is a small portion of what we did that day.

Mi sobrino Angel, quien ha estado trabajando como un fotógrafo free lance por los últimos dos años me sugirió trajera por lo menos cuatro pinturas grandes a su estudio del tema del desnudo femenino, de manera que pudiera utilizarlas como fondo para la modelo, mientras yo realizara un diseño similar a las líneas en alguna de mis pinturas. Esto le permitió terminar un portafolio con un proyecto especial que estaba tratando de terminar. Nos vimos el viernes, 19 de junio a las 10:00 a.m. en su estudio localizado en un bonito complejo de apartamentos.
Comenzamos a trabajar tan pronto todo estuvo puesto. Yo traje mi cámara de manera que de rato en rato tanto mi sobrino como su primo me asistieran a grabar el video de la pintura sobre el cuerpo que estaba realizando. Anteriormente había realizado muchos trabajos de pintar sobre un cuerpo, pero ninguno había sido propiamente grabado en video como este esfuerzo tedioso que finalmente se llevó a cabo gracias a su ayuda. No fue fácil trabajar sobre el cuerpo de esta joven mientras me aseguraba de dirigir la toma que el camarógrafo improvisado hiciera. En muchas ocasiones tuve que colocar la cámara en una mano, mientras con la otra sostenía el pincel. Esto es una pequeña porción de lo que hicimos ese día.
La modelo hizo una labor excelente teniendo que aguantar tantas horas de pie, mientras era cubierta con pintura con base de agua.
Este proyecto terminó siendo parte de un performance improvisado para todos nosotros.
Todos los trabajos exhibidos en el video pertenecen a distintas etapas de desarrollo en mi carrera de 39 años como pintor (aunque soy un artista multimedia) .
Soy también un artista digital.

the present. Antin is a cultural chameleon, masquerading in theatrical or stage roles to
expose her many selves.

An international team of scientists led by Carnegie’s Guillem Anglada-Escudé and Paul Butler has discovered a potentially habitable
super-Earth orbiting a nearby star. The star is a member of a triple star system and has a different makeup than our Sun, being
relatively lacking in metallic elements. This discovery demonstrates that habitable planets could form in a greater variety of
environments than previously believed. Their work will be published by The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
The team used public data from the European Southern Observatory and analyzed it with a novel data analysis method. They also
incorporated new measurements from the Keck Observatory’s High Resolution Echelle Spectrograph and the new Carnegie Planet
Finder Spectrograph at the Magellan II Telescope.
Their planet-finding technique involved measuring the small wobbles in a star’s orbit in response to a planet’s gravity. Anglada-Escudé
and his team focused on an M-class dwarf star called GJ 667C, which is 22 light years away. It is a member of a triple-star system.
The other two stars (GJ 667AB) are a pair of orange K dwarfs, with a concentration of heavy elements only 25% that of our Sun’s.
Such elements are the building blocks of terrestrial planets so it was thought to be unusual for metal-depleted star systems to have
an abundance of low mass planets.
GJ 667C had previously been observed to have a super-Earth (GJ 667Cb) with a period of 7.2 days, although this finding was never published. This orbit is too tight, and thus hot, to support life. The new study started with the aim of obtaining the orbital parameters
of this super-Earth.
But in addition to this first candidate, the research team found the clear signal of a new planet (GJ 667Cc) with an orbital period of
28.15 days and a minimum mass of 4.5 times that of Earth. The new planet receives 90% of the light that Earth receives. However, because most of its incoming light is in the infrared, a higher percentage of this incoming energy should be absorbed by the planet.
When both these effects are taken into account, the planet is expected to absorb about the same amount of energy from its star
that the Earth absorbs from the Sun. This would allow surface temperatures similar to Earth and perhaps liquid water, but this
extreme cannot be confirmed without further information on the planet's atmosphere.
“This planet is the new best candidate to support liquid water and, perhaps, life as we know it,” Anglada-Escudé says.
The team notes that the system might also contain a gas-giant planet and an additional super-Earth with an orbital period of 75
days. However, further observations are needed to confirm these two possibilities.
“With the advent of a new generation of instruments, researchers will be able to survey many M dwarf stars for similar planets
eventually look for spectroscopic signatures of life in one of these worlds.”

ARTIST STATEMENT
My approach to art is multidisciplinary - large-scale drawing, painting, photography, clay, multi-media collages, and poetry – using one or more media appropriately for the projects she produces. I have developed many interconnected bodies of work, but I am especially dedicated to my works related to disability and inclusion. My show, WHACK’ed ... and then everything was different, honors traumatic brain injury survivors who changed perceptions of TBI and disability in general and became role models for millions of others. The series of large scale portraits personify the various causes of TBI as well as the diversity of people it affects. The portraits include those of rock and movie stars, Keith Richards and George Clooney; Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords; ABC-TV news correspondent Bob Woodruff; ARMY SPEC (retired) Claudia Carreon, a veteran of the Iraqi war; athletes Troy Aikman (NFL Hall of Famer) and Pat Lafontaine (NHL Hall of Famer); a very spirited 5 year old, Alexis Verzal, who was shaken and thrown into a wall at age 2; Trisha Meili, the "Central Park Jogger"; and Timothy Pruce, New York Brain Injury Association Vice-President.
The concept and formalism of my work is informed by my personal experience with traumatic brain injury and evokes the need to reassemble fragments of a pre-existing identity in order to create a new self. Thus the drawing/ cutting/ collage technique used throughout the series, a reflection and a silent testimony to the three phases of traumatic brain injury: Fractured/ Reassembled/ Whole.
First drawn in charcoal on paper based on photographs cropped to desired intimacy, the drawings are then imperfectly cut with scissors into squares and reassembled as a portrait on a painted canvas. “I use paper to draw the portraits because like a human being, paper is organic, resilient and fragile. It bends, absorbs and rips; and it bears witness to its endurance by exhibiting its scars in the process. “
The uneven grid effect resulting from the drawing/ cutting/ collage technique illustrates how TBI disrupts sensory and perceptual processes, such as the seamless way in which one's mind functions pre-injury - a phenomenon one is unconscious of until it is lost - and substitutes it with jagged awareness and fractured perceptions. The grid also acts as a metaphor for the support and structure survivors of TBI require to live a productive and rewarding life. Each portrait therefore is organized in a grid formation that reflects both an inward and an outward representation of traumatic brain injury. Like the philosopher Emmanuel Levinas, I believe the face is not only the outward sign of a personage, but the naked essence of humanity. As such, it reveals an extraordinary vulnerability and an astonishing resilience. By representing faces of TBI survivors on a large scale, I hope to elicit emotional intimacy and universality.
I want my work to bring awareness of Traumatic Brain Injury and its effects on people so the public at large better understand its symptoms and help and support injured soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan as well as their families, to transition and adapt to a new life. Based on my experience as an Artist in Residence at The Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Center in New York, and the success of my work with traumatic brain injury patients, I have partnered with the Brain Injury Association of America and the Society for Arts in Healthcare to educate the public about TBI through a touring exhibit of the portraits and to raise funds by auctioning the portraits to support a nationwide Artists in Residence program to serve people with traumatic brain injury in hospitals and rehabilitation facilities.

Recently, while I was working in the flower beds in the front yard, my neighbors stopped to chat as they returned
home from walking their dog.During our friendly conversation, I asked their little girl what she wanted to be when
she grows up.She said she wanted to be President some day.Both of her parents, liberal Democrats, were standing
there, so I asked her, "If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?"
She replied... "I'd give food and houses to all the homeless people."
Her parents beamed with pride!
"Wow...what a worthy goal!" I said.
"But you don't have to wait until you're President to do that!" I told her.
"What do you mean?" she replied.
So I told her, "You can come over to my house and mow the lawn, pull weeds, and trim my hedge, and I'll pay you $50.
Then you can go over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use
toward food and a new house."
She thought that over for a few seconds, then she looked me straight in the eye and asked,
"Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?"
I said, "Welcome to the Republican Party."
Her parents aren't speaking to me

not sure who paid for this real science, but many things must be considered
they approved the issue using the tools of their trade, is it peer reviewed?
as some of the comments suggest, there is no new news here.
human beings are complex and many experiences shape behavior.
teaching hate to a child will produce a child that hates
teaching people to think outside of their 'box' is the conundrum
teaching people to live and let live is the fundamental issue for peace
daily we see people kill others for the sake of color, sexual preference, etc.
it's often the fear of the unknown that makes people hate
security is a very human motivator, so as in the case of immigration
people are afraid of losing their job, a decline in the value of their home
because of 'new' neighbors, both of which can initiate hate and mistrust.
the underlying system of capitalism allows for economic groups to confront each other
over false scarcity...as if we do not have the means to build enough homes, etc. etc.
here we create 'winners and losers', good stuff and garbage...while none of this is so.
logic might say some folks are better than others, and some deserve more by 'natural right'.
but Christian ethic and similar practices teach otherwise..as in do unto other as you would......
