Vincenzo Lo Sasso

      QUADRO2r4-960x235
March 25 – April 16

Opening Reception Thursday 24th,  6:00 – 8:00pm

“Caleidoscopio”, 29 ft x 7.9 ft

The work of Vincenzo Lo Sasso is not only the search for a balance between opposing forces but rather, and radically so, the attempt to translate the ancient contrast between solid bodies and liquid presences into images, between that which is unmoving and that which cannot avoid swaying, ever more deeply, even between formalism and informal being. In his metals, treated, violated, oxidized, enameled, transformed into Caribbean islands or mini atolls on the Pacific, places where there is no clearly defined border between sea and earth, where each piece of territory or abyss is a space momentarily stolen, it’s a surface which could also turn back into water or the other way around – color and matter do not only speak of themselves, they do not present values which are exclusively descriptive or emotional, but they effectively reference those relationships and situations of stability or instability, specificity and non-specificity on which the whole planet rests today. The artist stages the continuous change of things, the constant being on the edge of the world, the unavoidable renewal of elements; on his strange metal canvas he blocks the continuous progress of evolution, and he does so not to deny it, but to emphasize it. In practice, Lo Sasso is inspired by Earth and its history, its destiny.

Why is the Gospel of Love dividing America? Fed up with the angry,
strident language filling the airwaves that has come to represent
the Christian faith, author, director, and follower Dan Merchant
set out to explore the collision of faith and culture in America.
What is all this fighting really about? The book and upcoming
documentary represent a two-year effort to "join the battlefield
in hopes of getting a conversation started." The result is a book
full of offbeat observations, fun anecdotes, comedic bits and in-depth
interviews. From Dan's hilarious bumper-sticker interviews with folks

Atrocities of the Spanish Conquistadors in the West Indies
c. 1513
This account is from Bartolome de Las Casas.  He was a missionary and conquistador.  He took part in the conquest of Cuba.  These accounts happened after this and one has to believe he was very troubled by what he witnessed.  There is no doubt about it; the Spanish were cruel in the conquest for gold and land.  Events like these listed below did nothing to help relations between the vastly different cultures.  Instead it was a major reason why the Taino and Arawak peoples became extinct.

The Spaniards with their horses, their spears and lances, began to commit murders and other strange cruelties.  They entered into towns and villages, sparing neither children nor old men and women.  They ripped their bellies and cut them to pieces as if they had been slaughtering lambs in a field.  They made bets with each other over who could thrust a sword into the middle of a man or who could cut off his head with one stroke.  They took little ones by their heels and crushed their heads against the cliffs.  Others they threw into the rivers laughing and mocking them as they tumbled into the water.  They put everyone they met to the edge of the sword.

One time I saw four or five important native nobles roasted and broiled upon makeshift grills.  The cried out pitifully.  This thing troubled our Captain that he could not sleep.  He commanded that they be strangled.  The Sergeant (I know him and his friends from Seville) would not strangle them but put bullets into their mouths instead.

I have seen all these things and others infinite.  Most tried to flee.  They tried to hide in the mountains.  They tried to flee from these men.  Men who were empty of all pity, behaving like savage beasts. They are nothing more than slaughterers and enemies of mankind.  These evil men had even taught their hounds, fierce dogs, to tear natives to pieces at first sight.

AND, when, although rare, the Indians put to death some Spaniards upon good right and law of justice; the Spaniards made an agreement that for every one Spaniard killed they had to slay one hundred Indians.

One time the Indians came to meet us and receive us with food and good cheer!  Instead, the devil, which had put himself in the Spaniards, put them all to the edge of the sword in my presence, without any cause whatsoever, more than three thousand souls.  I saw there such great cruelties, that never any man living either have or shall see the like.

In three or four months (myself being present) there died more than six thousand children, which the Spanish had sent into the Gold mines. FEATURE STORY

A Mohawk Perspective on Haiti
by Doug George-Kanentiio

The earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12 lasted about 35 seconds. But weeks of improbable rescues, tearful reunions and astonishing displays of resilience followed.

Haiti is a place of angry spirits never released from the agony of their passing.

This land was called Ayiti by its Arawak-Taino native peoples who may, according to some, be the relatives of the Iroquois.  We do have a place of common origin in the American south but while our ancestors migrated to the cool woodlands of the northeast others elected to enter the rich tropical waters of the Caribbean and gradually populate its islands before reaching the South American coast.

Haiti was populated by hundreds of thousands of Natives at the time of contact with the wayward explorer Cristobal Colon (mistakenly called Christopher Columbus) on December 6, 1492.  He landed in the northern part of Ayiti and his description of the region is worth quoting from his journal:

As I approached the entrance of this harbour (St. Nicholas) I marveled at its beauty and excellence....From there it is level as far as the cape where there is a beautiful beach and a grove of a thousand kinds, all loaded with fruit.... There must be a lot of people in this region since I have seen many canoes."

On December 13 Colon wrote:
"Their land is so beautiful and fertile... Everyone fled when they heard we were coming leaving behind whatever they had. The village consisted of more than 1,000 houses and must have had a population of over 3,000...they (the Natives) gave beautiful things to everyone they met... My men told me that these people were more handsome and of better disposition than any that we had seen up to now but I do not know how this is possible.. As to the country, the best in Castile in beauty and fertility cannot compare with this."

So what did Colon and the Spaniards do to this paradise inhabited by Arawak-Tainos who may have numbered as many as three million on that island alone?

They slaughtered them by the tens of thousands, by the hundreds of thousands, by the million.  They used disease, human-eating dogs, mutilations, mass burnings, hangings, and torture.  They amputated the hands of those Natives who did not bring back a specific amount of gold from the island streams, they used others as practice for their swords, they raped children and women and murdered with impunity.  They enslaved and worked to death countless natives and used the corpses to feed their animals. These "civilized" Christian men brought about a holocaust equal in horror to the Nazis and effected the extermination of an entire people without the convenience of machine guns, zyklon B cyanide gas, or carbon monoxide death vans. These men, who lived in fear of a wrathful God, hunted Natives as sport and used them as conveyances lest their silk slippers touch the earth.

The Native population collapsed before this savagery which the Spaniards, and their European imitators, would repeat throughout the Caribbean, in Mexico and into Central and South America.  Of the millions of Natives who had made Ayiti into an ecological Eden only 60,000 survived to 1507. By 1531 only 600 Arawak-Taino were alive and a few years later none at all.  Complete genocide by intent and design.  Nothing remains of those people other than a weak DNA trail.

These were citizens of Ayiti five nations.  They engineered conical buildings made of biodegradable materials capable of withstanding hurricanes. Their communities were surrounded by park like forest teemed with wildlife. Each town had a central plaza for ceremonies, athletic games and communal meetings. They had a rich diet of fruits, vegetables, seafood and meat from mammals.  Their land was so fertile as to require a minimal of labour which in turn accorded them great freedom to pursue the arts.  They danced, sang and held elaborate rituals to celebrate life. They ate an enviable diet based on corn, squash, and beans.  They consumed large amounts of peanuts, peppers, sweet potatoes, and yams.

Doug George-Kanentiio

Their builders and architects did not use stone when constructing their homes.  Stone was for carving, not for living in.  They knew cones and circles were ideal shapes for tropical climates since the winds went around and over but not through. They were adept at managing their planting fields using natural fertilizers such as fish to maximize crop yields. They did not have to strip the forests or suck the land dry of nutrients. They lived in a state of tranquility and peace but were alert to the incursions of other people. But they made a fatal mistake with regards to Colon - they let him leave to return to Spain even after they had come to blows with his men.

Colon returned with a large fleet, heavily armed and with avarice in their hearts. They wanted wealth, gold in particular, and damned the cost to the Natives of squeezing it from the land.

This is what comes to mind when the latest tragedies are reported from Haiti.  It is of a land where suffering is a constant, where human life is one defined by deprivation, where death is massive, overwhelming, and  not mourned.  The troubled spirits from 500 years ago cross the land having never been addressed or released. They are unquiet and because they remain here without recognition they will continue to wreak havoc in our time.

[Editors Note:  While in the process of publishing this story in the March 2010 issue of the Smoke Signal News, we received the message below.  The message criticizes the author about three words out of nine hundred and eleven words.  "...Nothing remains of those people other than a weak DNA trail..."  The reader should know there is scientific basis for the author's statement.  However, more recent unconfirmed studies suggest the degree of true Taino DNA is much larger among current residents of Puerto Rico (Boriken) than originally thought.  We see no issue here, but lets allow you, the reader to judge.

Historians and anthropologists generally accept the origin of the Taino people of the Caribbean to be South America, not North America.]

Hello ____________,

In the Spirit of Our Taino Ancestors I am writing you to address a statement that Mr. Doug George Kanentiio wrote in the article "Mohawk Perspective on Haiti" and the statement that what was left of the Taino people was a "weak DNA trail."

We the Taino People are the children of an ancestral prophecy. We heard the call of our ancestors in our visions; in the wind; in the mist of our mountains; in the sounds of conch shells that were felt in our veins.

It is obvious that he is not aware of the highly percentage of Taino DNA in our islands and families. Our traditions of indigenous practices have survived all kinds of attempts to erase who we are.

These types of statements written by Mr. Doug George Kanentiio only emphasize the lack of knowledge that still exist out there about our people.

I am surprise as I have heard that he was a friend and I am sure that he also shared in the sacred smoke the spirit of our people.

I hope that Mr. Doug George Kanentiio  find in him way to apologize to our Taino community for such inaccurate statement.

With respect to our Native ways,

Maweiaru

Hispañiola prospered greatly as a colony, but experienced one major problem, French pirates. In order to prevent further pirate raids, Spain gave France the western half of Hispañiola. This occurred in 1697, creating Santo Domingo (Spanish) and Saint Dominigue (French). Both halves prospered greatly and by the late 1700's had an estimated 500,000 slaves.

Pierre Dominique Toussaint L'Ouverture was born in 1746 into slavery. Due to his knowledge and manner, he was given the job of coach driver. With his free time, he taught himself to read and write. This educational background made him the perfect man to take charge of the Haitian Revolution.

Maroons, guerilla mulattos, used guerilla warfare in order to get rights for mulattos in Hispañiola. The French Revolution in 1789 gave rise to new government. A Colonial Assembly was created, a group, which could make laws for Saint Dominigue. The Rights of Man was also created in France, which gave rights to all men such as suffrage. In 1790 Ogé started a mulatto rebellion in an attempt to secure suffrage. This was, however, suppressed by the white militia. The attempt, though failed, showed unrest in St. Dominigue.

Prior to being inhabited by Europeans, Hispañiola was inhabited by the Taino/Arawaks. They were a polytheistic group who practiced a variety of rituals in a central courtyard.

Hurbert, Montas

The Revolution Begins:
The first slave rebellion of the Haitian Revolution took place in 1791 and was led by Toussaint L'Ouverture. Fellow conspirators consisted of Georges Biassou, Jean François and Jeannot. Leading each group was a large pole capped with the carcass of a dead white baby. Every white in the groups path was slaughtered and all their property set ablaze. This revolt set off other revolts in Cap Français, both of which were put to stop. The whites, of course, retaliated by massacring blacks. Ten thousand blacks and 2,000 whites were killed. Mulattos, such as André Rigaud, fought for Mulatto rights, but were put down by the white militias. As it stood, blacks fought mulattos and whites, whites fought mulattos and blacks and mulattos fought the whites. This chaos led to intervention by England and Spain in St. Dominigue.

French and Spanish colonizers brought thousands of slaves to Hispañiola to field the fertile land. By the late 1700s, the island was populated by approximately 500,000 people.

Hurbert, Montas

Return to top of page

An Independent Nation:

The mulattos were the only things lying in the way of a united black colony. Rigaud led a campaign against Toussaint, which was defeated, leaving Toussaint in charge. Toussaint drafted a constitution and named himself governor of the island. St. Dominigue still took advice from France but governed almost entirely as an independent state.

Napoleon, just recently having taken control of France, could not stand to see this colony lost. He sent troops into Haiti to regain control of the colony. Toussaint was captured and imprisoned in Fort de Joux, where he died in 1802. Fighting continued under leadership of Jean Jacques Dessalines and Henri Christophe. In 1804, France was defeated after years of guerilla warfare and Dessalines named himself ruler of the first western independent black nation, Haiti, meaning a "higher place".

Toussaint L'Ouverture was the most important figure in the Haitian Revolution. He is often described as a very ugly man, a characteristic seen often in French art, but rarely in Haitian art.

Hurbert, Montas

Return to top of page

International Effects:

There were three main factors of the independent Haitian state that caused international effects. First, it was comprised of free blacks. It was also the first independent state in Latin America. The last factor was that Haiti was a colony under imperial rule, which had freed itself. All of these factors caused international effects. The southern United States relied on slavery. The fact that slaves had just overrun a nearby nation scared many in the US. Officials took action to protect the public from this fact, so as not to allow a slave rebellion. The rest of Latin America followed Haiti's lead. Leaders such as Bolivar and San Martin took great advances in making Latin American nations independent. The reason that these nations revolted, besides the hardships of colonialization, was that they had seen success in the Haiti and realized that they could also be free as a colony. The thought of a colony gaining its freedom also scared many European imperial nations. In these ways, the Haitian revolution had an expansive effect.

The island of Hispañiola is located in the Caribbean. The eastern portion of the island is the Dominican Republic and the western portion is Haiti. In the 1700's however, the eastern portion was Spanish and called Santo Domingo and the western portion was French and called Saint Dominigue.

Old Drugs, New Tricks
Cholesterol and cancer drugs may fight Alzheimer's Context: Often a drug that treats one disease works for another, apparently unrelated disease. Two early antidepressants began their careers as an antibiotic (iproniazid) and an antihistamine (imipramine). The impotence drug Viagra was designed to prevent heart failure. Now, two recent papers report that drugs already on the market may help prevent Alzheimer's disease.

Methods and Results: Some studies have found that patients taking statins, a class of cholesterol-lowering drugs, are less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease. A team led by Sam Gandy at the Farber Institute for Neurosciences at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia sought an explanation of this finding. It turns out that when statins are added to cultures of neurons, the neurons more quickly destroy a precursor of the protein amyloid that goes on to form the plaques characteristic of Alzheimer's. To determine exactly what statins do in neurons, Gandy's team both blocked and mimicked their effects by manipulating proteins—and so showed which proteins the statins affect.
