Racism: A History [2007] -
1/3
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efI6T8lovqY
Reaching back across the centuries this program sheds light on historical attitudes
toward human differences. It assesses the significance of Biblical narratives
including the curse of Ham in the evolution of European concepts of race and goes
on to examine the basis of institutionalized racism entwined with fervent
capitalism on which the transatlantic slave trade operated. The destruction of
Americas indigenous civilizations and the dehumanization and exploitation of
Africans are studied alongside the writings of Enlightenment philosophers and
historians.Experts interviewed include Dr. Orlando Patterson of Harvard University
Dr. Barnor Hesse of Northwestern and Professor James Walvin of the University of York.

Racism a History - A Fatal Impact: Eugenics Social Darwinism and Genocide 2007
(2-3)
http://stagevu.com/video/agzruzuhxakg
During the 19th century racial categorization took on a pseudo-scientific stance.
This program shows how the academic racism of the period helped to spread imperialist
policies across the globe. Sifting through the science of eugenics and it's link
to social Darwinism, the film juxtaposes the racial hygiene theories of Robert Knox,
 Francis Galton and Eugene
Fischer with racial warfare in Tasmania, Victorian apathy in famine-wracked India,
and prefacing the Holocaust - horrific German colonization tactics in Namibia.
Expert commentary comes from author David Dabydeen, Dr. Maria Misra of Oxford
University and Professor Catherine Hall of University College London. Contains
graphic footage from concentration camps.

Racism: A History [2007] - 3/3
Episode 3/3: A Savage Legacy

- The third and final episode examines the impact of racism in the 20th Century. By 1900,
European colonial expansion had reached deep into the heart of Africa. Under the rule of
King Leopold II, The Belgian Congo was turned into a vast rubber plantation. Men, women
and children who failed to gather their latex quotas would have their limbs dismembered.
The country became the scene of one of the century's greatest racial genocides, as an
estimated 10 million Africans perished under colonial rule. Contains scenes which some
viewers may find disturbing.

This site exists because we are not being told the truth about our history. Are you under
the impression that Oswald killed Kennedy? That the Media is independent? That the CIA
never operates without presidential authority? If so, you need to peruse these archives
and find out what you've been missing.

This site is designed to provide researchers links and leads to finding solid information
about our real history, as opposed to the convenient - if somewhat fake - history the
"mainstream" corporate press feeds us

It's time for those of us who care about our future to start reclaiming our past. This
site has been in existence since 1993, and will continue to evolve. Thanks for all the
feedback! Please visit here again, and tell your friends.

And get offline sometime!
The library is still a wonderful place in which to find the truth.

jebuz-killswitch.jpg
I can't put my finger on it, but something seems wrong with Jebuz coaxing youngsters

towards his light switch...
http://gizmodo.com/359540/jesus-switch-turns-on-off

This could be the official lightswitch-plate of the Catholic church.

Actually, it probably explains the Catholic church.

Let this serve as a lesson on how far kitsch can go wrong.
[from Gizmodo]

OK, that image has to be just about the most disturbing I've ever seen.

Do I want the light on? No, I want it off..wait, no I want it .... Oh Jesus! Turn it off! Turn it off! Ahhhhhh!

Everything you know about Heaven is Goofy

johnny_jpeg, 09 Feb 2008

Have you noticed a lack of biblical verse describing heaven (and hell) as it's ususally depicted? Well, they're ain't any!
Heaven as place... hell as place... winged angels... sitting around on puffy clouds being passive and shooting the crap...
halos... it's all so much hoo-hah says
some guy who knows better.

Instead heaven seems to be about waiting around for essentially infinity, for the end of the world. Ho hum. I'm picturing
some ambitious priest/shyster in 1500 A.D. saying, "I can't talk crowds into a lifetime of surrendering their control and
their cash with that." So we sample a little of Dante's fantasies of Heaven, Purgatory and Hell, we take Michelangelo's
Last Judgment, Judaisms heaven ideology and Greek-speaking Christians fatalist ideas and toss them all together in
 some hopelessly off-target religious casserole.

heaven.jpg
"Then what are we doing here? Wanna go get coffee?"

Comments

Johnny Jpeg,
Don't knock heaven, okay. Some of us still believe in it.

BILL COSBY: KEEPING IT REAL

I like the African-American phrase “keepin’ it real.”

This is what Bill Cosby (whose humor I have often
enjoyed since the mid-1960s; I am now 56)
did in a famous address to the NAACP in 2004:

* * *

Bill Cosby

Address at the NAACP’ on the 50th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education

delivered 17 May 2004, Constitution Hall, Washington D.C.

Ladies and gentlemen, these people set, they opened the doors, they gave us the right, and today, ladies and gentlemen, in our cities and public schools we have fifty percent drop out. In our own neighborhood, we have men in prison. No longer is a person embarrassed because they’re pregnant without a husband. No longer is a boy considered an embarrassment if he tries to run away from being the father of the unmarried child.

I’m talking about these people who cry when their son is standing there in an orange suit. Where were you when he was two? Where were you when he was twelve? (applause) Where were you when he was eighteen, and how come you don’t know he had a pistol? And where is his father, and why don’t you know where he is? And why doesn’t the father show up to talk to this boy?

The church is only open on Sunday. And you can’t keep asking Jesus to ask doing things for you. You can’t keep asking that God will find a way. God is tired of you. God was there when they won all those cases. 50 in a row. That’s where God was because these people were doing something. And God said, “I’m going to find a way.” I wasn’t there when God said it… I’m making this up. But it sounds like what God would do.

We cannot blame white people. White people… white people don’t live over there. They close up the shop early. The Korean ones still don’t know us as well…they stay open 24 hours.

50 percent drop out rate, I’m telling you, and people in jail, and women having children by five, six different men. Under what excuse, I want somebody to love me, and as soon as you have it, you forget to parent. Grandmother, mother, and great grandmother in the same room, raising children, and the child knows nothing about love or respect of any one of the three of them. All this child knows is “gimme, gimme, gimme.” These people want to buy the friendship of a child….and the child couldn’t care less. Those of us sitting out here who have gone on to some college or whatever we’ve done, we still fear our parents. And these people are not parenting. They’re buying things for the kid. $500 sneakers, for what? They won’t buy or spend $250 on Hooked on Phonics.

A Kenneth Clark, somewhere in his home in upstate New York…just looking ahead. Thank God, he doesn’t know what’s going on, thank God. But these people, the ones up here in the balcony fought so hard. Looking at the incarcerated, these are not political criminals. These are people going around stealing Coca Cola. People getting shot in the back of the head over a piece of pound cake! Then we all run out and are outraged, “The cops shouldn’t have shot him.” What the hell was he doing with the pound cake in his hand? I wanted a piece of pound cake just as bad as anybody else. And I looked at it and I had no money. And something called parenting said if get caught with it you’re going to embarrass your mother. Not you’re going to get your butt kicked. No. You’re going to embarrass your mother. You’re going to embarrass your family.

Are you not paying attention, people with their hat on backwards, pants down around the crack. Isn’t that a sign of something, or are you waiting for Jesus to pull his pants up. Isn’t it a sign of something when she’s got her dress all the way up to the crack…and got all kinds of needles and things going through her body. What part of Africa did this come from? We are not Africans. Those people are not Africans, they don’t know a damned thing about Africa. With names like Shaniqua, Shaligua, Mohammed and all that crap and all of them are in jail. (When we give these kind of names to our children, we give them the strength and inspiration in the meaning of those names. What’s the point of giving them strong names if there is not parenting and values backing it up.)

Brown Versus the Board of Education is no longer the white person’s problem. We’ve got to take the neighborhood back. We’ve got to go in there. Just forget telling your child to go to the Peace Corps. It’s right around the corner. It’s standing on the corner. It can’t speak English. It doesn’t want to speak English. I can’t even talk the way these people talk. “Why you ain’t where you is go, ra,” I don’t know who these people are. And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. Then I heard the father talk. This is all in the house. You used to talk a certain way on the corner and you got into the house and switched to English. Everybody knows it’s important to speak English except these knuckleheads. You can’t land a plane with “why you ain’t…” You can’t be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth. There is no Bible that has that kind of language. Where did these people get the idea that they’re moving ahead on this? Well, they know they’re not, they’re just hanging out in the same place, five or six generations sitting in the projects when you’re just supposed to stay there long enough to get a job and move out.

Now look, I’m telling you. It’s not what they’re doing to us. It’s what we’re not doing. 50 percent drop out. Look, we’re raising our own ingrown immigrants. These people are fighting hard to be ignorant. There’s no English being spoken, and they’re walking and they’re angry. Oh God, they’re angry and they have pistols and they shoot and they do stupid things. And after they kill somebody, they don’t have a plan. Just murder somebody. Boom. Over what? A pizza? And then run to the poor cousin’s house. They sit there and the cousin says “What are you doing here?” “I just killed somebody, man.” “What?” “I just killed somebody, I’ve got to stay here.” “No, you don’t.” “Well, give me some money, I’ll go…” “Where are you going?” “North Carolina.” Everybody wanted to go to North Carolina. But the police know where you’re going because your cousin has a record.

I’m saying Brown Vs. Board of Education. We’ve got to hit the streets, ladies and gentlemen. I’m winding up, now , no more applause. I’m saying, look at the Black Muslims. There are Black Muslims standing on the street corners and they say so forth and so on, and we’re laughing at them because they have bean pies and all that, but you don’t read “Black Muslim gunned down while chastising drug dealer.” You don’t read that. They don’t shoot down Black Muslims. You understand me. Muslims tell you to get out of the neighborhood. When you want to clear your neighborhood out, first thing you do is go get the Black Muslims, bean pies and all. And your neighborhood is then clear. The police can’t do it.

I’m telling you Christians, what’s wrong with you? Why can’t you hit the streets? Why can’t you clean it out yourselves? It’s our time now, ladies and gentlemen. It is our time. And I’ve got good news for you. It’s not about money. It’s about you doing something ordinarily that we do—get in somebody else’s business. It’s time for you to not accept the language that these people are speaking, which will take them nowhere. What the hell good is Brown V. Board of Education if nobody wants it?

What is it with young girls getting after some girl who wants to still remain a virgin. Who are these sick black people, and where did they come from, and why haven’t they been parented to shut up? To go up to girls and try to get a club where “you are nobody..,” this is a sickness, ladies and gentlemen, and we are not paying attention to these children. These are children. They don’t know anything. They don’t have anything. They’re homeless people. All they know how to do is beg. And you give it to them, trying to win their friendship. And what are they good for? And then they stand there in an orange suit and you drop to your knees, “He didn’t do anything, he didn’t do anything.” Yes, he did do it. And you need to have an orange suit on too.

We have to begin to build in the neighborhood, have restaurants, have cleaners, have pharmacies, have real estate, have medical buildings instead of trying to rob them all. And so, ladies and gentlemen, please, Dorothy Height, wherever she’s sitting, she didn’t do all that stuff so that she could hear somebody say “I can’t stand algebra, I can’t stand…” and “what you is.” It’s horrible.

Basketball players, multimillionaires, can’t write a paragraph. Football players, multimillionaires, can’t read. Yes. Multimillionaires. Well, Brown v. Board of Education, where are we today? It’s there. They paved the way. What did we do with it? The white man, he’s laughing, got to be laughing. 50 percent drop out, rest of them in prison.

You got to tell me that if there was parenting, help me, if there was parenting, he wouldn’t have picked up the Coca Cola bottle and walked out with it to get shot in the back of the head. He wouldn’t have. Not if he loved his parents. And not if they were parenting! Not if the father would come home. Not if the boy hadn’t dropped the sperm cell inside of the girl and the girl had said, “No, you have to come back here and be the father of this child.” Not: “I don’t have to.”

Therefore, you have the pile up of these sweet beautiful things born by nature raised by no one. Give them presents. You’re raising pimps. That’s what a pimp is. A pimp will act nasty to you so you have to go out and get them something. And then you bring it back and maybe he or she hugs you. And that’s why pimp is so famous. They’ve got a drink called the “Pimp-something.” You all wonder what that’s about, don’t you? Well, you’re probably going to let Jesus figure it out for you. Well, I’ve got something to tell you about Jesus. When you go to the church, look at the stained glass things of Jesus. Look at them. Is Jesus smiling? Not in one picture. So, tell your friends. Let’s try to do something. Let’s try to make Jesus smile. Let’s start parenting. Thank you, thank you.

The two planes that hit the world trade center were most likely US Scare Force Unmanned Northrop
Grumman E-10 MC2A's. The buildings went down in a heap from demolitions grade thermite. The
Pentagon was hit by a missile fired from a Scare Force jet, the hole in the Pennsylvania field was
probably created by another scarce force missile. The Air Force was ordered to stand down, by a
higher up in Government, probably the VP. Black Water ops were probably the hired thugs who carried
it all out. It was probably all planned through elements of the Project For A New American Century, think
tank, for the sake of building and sustaining their private corporate

You think the Earth is big?          http://www.dasmirnov.net/blog/you_think_the_earth_is_big

 earth%20in%20prosspective

Adam sent me the following images a couple of weeks back. I think they're great they really do show the sense of scale much more than
just using circles. The Earth compared with our rather warmer, greenhouse of a twin, Venus. The baron, yet once water covered Mars.
Mercury which was smashed to bits by an impact leaving a large iron core, and Pluto, which we don't know much about.Next up we bring in
the gas giants, Jupiter and my favourite Saturn as well as Uranus and Neptune. The Sun makes even the gas giants look like ping pong balls.
Think the Sun is big? Think again, it'll get pretty big in the future, swallowing Mercury and Venus, perhaps the Earth, when it becomes
a Red Giant like Arcturus shown here. But it will never get anywhere near as big as the Super Giants, which live very short lives, and end in
the most catastrophic way imaginable, in a massive supernova explosion, throwing its ashes throughout the galaxy, the very atoms we're
made of was made in these massive stars and thrown across the galaxy in the explosion, the shockwave probably causing clouds of gas
and dust to collapse and create solar systems. The core of the star will be a super-dense neutron star or a pulsar, if the star was massive
 enough it may even form a black hole.Categories: Science 23rd June 2006 16:53:39, 231 words, 7865 views

The Tree of Life Trailer 2011 HD
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLPe0fHuZsc

Uploaded by on Dec 15, 2010

Genre: Drama, Fantasy, Science Fiction Director: Terrence Malick Cast: Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Jessica Chastain Writers: Terrence Malick In theaters: May 27th, 2011 Synopsis: From Terrence Malick, the acclaimed director of such classic films as Badlands, Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950's. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick's signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life.

Kate passed away on january 19th.

This show was her last public performance. She was so lively, funny and strong that night,
it's very hard to imagine that she's gone forever.
Requiem in pace, dear Kate. Traditional French Christmas Carol: 'Ça Bergère'.
Kate and Anna McGarrigle, their daughters Lily Lanken and Martha Wainwright,
with aunt to the latter: Sloan Wainwright. (From left to right). Song from the Christmas
concert 'a not so silent night' in the Royal Albert Hall, London, 9th December 2009.

oopsydahlia (2 years ago) I love the vocal richness of the McGarrigle

Renditions should not be, in my view, an attempt to replicate, but an
opportunity to reinterpret and highlight other qualities in a song
which may not have been previously expressed. That a person prefers
one version over another reflects more on her/him, than it does
     on the performer.

I prefer this type of song and arrangement over some of the more overproduced

Steam Cleaners For Home Use There has been a huge upsurge in the number of households owning and using steam cleaners
to make their cleaning easier. Steam Cleaners for home use have become more popular for a number of reasons. A drop in price,
making the machines very affordable A realisation of how effective steam is at sanitizing and cleaning A move towards “greener”
cleaning and care for the environment A recognition that we were just using too many chemicals that could build up in the home
at have adverse affects on the health of our families. Of course steam has been popular in some parts of the world for quite a
number of years, Europe (particularly Italy) has used steam extensively for several decades so the technology has advanced well.
My top 10 uses of Steam To Sanitize. Steam kills bacteria even if I can’t see it To de-grease. Wherever there is grease steam will
melt it away To freshen. Odors are often caused by hidden bacteria. Steam kills the bacteria and no bacteria means no odors
Stain removal. Soiled carpets can be difficult to clean, steam simply pushes the stain out and onto a cloth Removal of grime from cracks.
Sometimes a cloth just will not get to the dirt. Try playing a jet of steam onto a crack or grouting and watch the dirt flow To get to where
I can’t see. I hate bleaching sinks and overflow traps. With steam you can be sure an area is sanitized deep around the pipe bends.
To sterilize baby toys. Toys are prime bacteria breeding ground. Steam makes your babies toys safe Creases will drop out of clothes with
a blast of steam Windows will be left streak free with a steam squeegee. To kill parasites on pet bedding. Your best friend may bring home
the odd unwanted visitor. steam will send them packing Steam cleaners for home are now easy to use quick and simple to set up and so
versatile. With a simple upright cleaner and a portable steamer (try the Haan Steam Cleaner Bundle) you can carry out just about every
home steaming job. Alternatively try a multi-purpose machine such as the McCulloch. Once you have bought a machine the trick is to
think of it every time you think of cleaning. A steam cleaner will make most household cleaning much easier but it is often the case that
people only use their steamer for spring cleaning or dealing with major dirt or accidents. I no longer think of using chemical cleaners in
my bathroom. My hand steamer is very quick to set up ( roughly three minutes from filling to steaming).

I start by steaming my tiling. Jet around basins and the bath. My glass shower door is left without soap scum or streaks.
I can sanitize the toilet without touching anything and without being left with clothes that need sterilizing. I finish by sending a
pressured jet down the drain holes. Bathroom clean in less than half an hour.

My hard-floors are just as easy with my steam mop. I vacuum as before.
Then sweep through with the floor-steam mop in less than 2o minutes from my front door,
through the kitchen and across my laundry room. The time for steam cleaners for home
use is here. Make your life easier and be confident your home is sanitized with steam.
I would never be without it...

Amazonian Children Understand ‘Universal’ Geometry Regardless of Schooling

Amazonian children who never went to school understand the properties of points, lines and angles,
proving the basic principles of geometry emerge regardless of education, a study said. Eight children,
ages 7 to 13, and 22 adults from the Mundurucu tribe in the Amazon, could identify the number
of lines that can be drawn through two points, correctly complete unfinished triangles and estimate angles,
according to a paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The 18th-century philosopher
    Immanuel Kant
argued that humans have an intuitive understanding of geometry,
which enables mathematicians to derive new, useful results. Abstract geometry may be innate, or it may be
learned naturally through day-to-day interaction with the world, the authors wrote.
The test results “suggest Euclidean geometry, inasmuch as it concerns basic objects such as points and line
on a plane, is a cross-cultural universal that results from the inherent properties of the human mind as it
develops in its natural environment,” wrote the authors, who included Elizabeth Spelke, a specialist in
developmental studies at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The researchers also tested adults from the U.S., as well as French children 7 to 13 years old and American
children from 5 to 7. The control groups showed the same performance profile as the Amazonians, except
for the American children, who were younger, the researchers said.
The researchers asked the children and adults questions about lines, planes, angles, triangles and spheres.

They were given sketches of lines and asked questions such as “Can a line be drawn through two points?”
and “Can two such lines be drawn?” All groups performed better at planar than spherical geometry, the study said.

    Top Ten Observatories

By The Astronomist on Wednesday, December 23, 2009
This is a list of the 10 greatest modern astronomical observatories ever imagined. Some are being built presently, some are scouring for funding, and some are dreams. They are in no precise order, but I have tried to place them according to their extremeness with respect to scientific impact, cost, technology, and size.

    1. Laser Interferometer Space Antenna
LISA is in a class of its own.  In some sense it does not belong on this list because it literally transcends every other observatory on this list by monitoring the universe through gravitational waves and not electromagnetic waves.  If LISA is successful it will be the first direct observation (unless a project like advanced LIGO beats it to the punch) of gravitational waves which are predicted by Einstein's theory of General Relativity. LISA will detect the variation in distance of three spacecraft flying in an equilateral triangle formation. The LISA instruments are classic interferometers sensitive to gravitational  waves which distort the space-time between the spacecraft by as little as just tens of pm. Soon the LISA Pathfinder mission will be launched to prove the concept and technology necessary for the complete observatory. LISA is a profound step forward for humankind, like an infant opening its eyes for the first time.

    2. Terrestrial Planet Finder
The TPF is visionary space mission which will likely consist of two observatories in space a coronagraph and an interferometer array.  The TPF will search for extrasolar terrestrial planets around relatively close stars like the Alpha Centauri system and systems where the probability to find an extra solar planet is high.  The coronagraph would be a very large optical telescope, at least three times that of Hubble, that would also have special optics to occult the light of bright stars in order to see the dim planets next to their brilliant host stars.  The interferometer, illustrated above, would consist of several small infrared telescopes orbiting in formation; the interferometric technique would allow the telescopes to obtain a resolution of a much larger telescope.

    3. James Webb Space Telescope
The JWST is considered the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope.  It will study galaxy, star and planet formation in the Universe with supreme depth and precision.  Just imagine the James Webb Ultra Deep Field. The telescope engineering is impressive.  The telescope's primary mirror will consist of a 6.5 m (about 6 times the area of Hubble) gold coated beryllium refelector composed of 18 hexagonal segments which will unfold in space. The mirror is made of such special materials because of the need for specific thermal and reflective properties. For example beryllium is the metal with the greatest heat dissipation characteristics per unit weight and further its relatively low coefficient of thermal expansion imparts stability to the mirror.  JWST is designed to observe very distant objects such that much of their light will be in the infrared when it reaches the telescope and therefore JWST will be an infrared telescope, hence the gold coated reflecting surface.  JWST is packed with advanced technology like hemispherical resonator gyros which should last longer than the traditional mechanical gyroscopes which were on Hubble and needed servicing during missions. This is necessary because JWST will be far from earth at Lagrange point two, some 1.5 million km from Earth and not close enough for simple repair missions. If all this sounds ambitious and outlandish that is because it is, but the science that the JWST will produce will certainly justify the effort.

    4. Overwhelmingly Large Telescope
The OWL is the most unlikely telescope on this list; the project has been eclipsed by the European Extremely Large Telescope, the EELT, on all practical accounts. The OWL would be a unrealistically large 100 m telescope allowing it to observe objects as faint as an apparent magnitude of 38.  In order to control costs the OWL would be based on mass production of major cost items like the structural components and segmented mirrors, but a review panel determined the cost would be at least 1.2 billion Euros. This cost is considered unacceptably high.

    5. The Square Kilometer Array
The SKA will be a radio telescope with a million kilometers of collecting area. It will be the largest telescope ever created and perhaps the most expensive at 1.5 billion Euro. The SKA will probe the gaseous component of the early Universe with sensitivity 50 times greater than the Very Large Array. This sensitivity and a wide field of view will also allowing the SKA to probe general relativity by monitoring the timing of a network of pulsars. Like the VLA the SKA will be an interferometric array consisting individual antenna stations working together to synthesize an aperture with a diameter up to several thousand kilometers.  Many things about the final design for the SKA are uncertain, in fact factions within astronomy have threatened to doom the entire project. The disagreements stem from different opinions on what the primary scientific objectives should be for the project. Currently it is planned that approximately 50% of the collecting area would be contained in a dense central array of 5 km in diameter to provide high brightness sensitivity at arc-second scale resolution for studies of faint spectral lines from structures in the early universe. Another 25% of the collecting area would be located within a diameter of 150 km; the image above shows a possible layout for the array with arms in a spiral pattern with a diamter of 150 km. The remainng 25% of the collecting area would be at baselines of 3000 km or greater. The distribution of antennas directly impacts what kind of science can be accomplished. The video below shows a possible layout for the SKA in dramatic fashion.

    6. European Extremely Large Telescope
The EELT is the realistic result of the OWL telescope proposal. The primary mirror will be 42 meters consisting of 984 1.4 meter segments of only 50 mm thickness.  The mirrors are thin in order to have excellent thermal properties. The EELT will have an adaptive optics system which will perform active adjustment of a 2.5 meter mirror to compensate for atmospheric affects which distort images. There will be 5000 actuators supporting this mirror which precisely adjust the mirror's shape thousands of times per second in order to correct images.  The reality is that the limiting effect on all large ground based telescopes is atmospheric seeing, therefore all the ground based optical telescopes on this list use some kind of adaptive optics.

    7. Large Synoptic Survey Telescope
The LSST is an 8-meter telescope with a 3 degree field of view (consider that the moon is only half a degree in the sky).  This design configuration allows the LSST to implement an observing program that detects near-Earth objects which are small and faint in exposures of 10 or 20 seconds, and it allows images to be stacked for deep and wide imaging for star and galaxy surveys. The science mission drivers of LSST include the nature of dark energy, the solar system, optical transients, and galactic structure. It is the LSST technology and the rate at which it will produce data that makes it so remarkable. The LSST camera is 3200 Megapixels (it is a giant array of 189 CCD chips) and will create 400,000 sixteen Megapixel images per night (resulting in about 30 TB) for a total of 60 PB of raw data over 10 years. The total data volume after processing will be over 100 PB requiring 250 TFlops of computing power for processing. LSST will be wide, fast, and deep. It should be ready for first light by 2014.

    8. Thirty Meter Telescope
The TMT is another extremely large ground based telescope. Its design calls for a collecting area that is thirty meters or about 100 feet in diameter. In order to better explore the early universe it will be sensitive to light in the optical near infrared. Relative to the Hubble the TMT will have 144 times more collecting area and a factor of 10 better spatial resolution in the near-infrared. The TMT will have a primary mirror composed of 492 segments with a rotating tertiary mirror (as seen in the above image, a Ritchey-Chretien telescope) in order to direct light onto multiple instruments and it will of course use adaptive optics to correct for turbulence in earth's atmosphere. The TMT will implement a scaled of version of the segmented mirror technology of the Keck telescopes at a size which will produce significant science at a reasonable cost.

    9. Giant Magellan Telescope
The GMT differentiates itself from the other giant ground based telescopes on this list in that its primary mirror will not be segmented in the standard manner, but will instead consist of seven monolithic 8.4 m mirrors.  Because six of the mirrors are off-axis (they don't focus light to a point directly above them, but rather to a point off to their side; see image above) they present a unique engineering challenge that will synthesize a telescope with a resolving power of a single 24.5 m mirror.  Currently the first mirror has been cast at the Steward Observatory Mirror Lab as a proof of concept that an acceptably accurate shape can be achieved.

    10. Atacma Large Submillimeter Array
ALMA is probably the most practical observatory on this list and it is almost already completed (located in the Atacama desert), whereas many of the other observatories on this list are only the twinkle in astronomer's eyes. It is currently under construction in the thin (altitude of 5,000 m or 16,000 feet), dry air, of northern Chile. ALMA is not actually a single telescope, but an array of 50 (this number may change and has already been reduced once) antennae working in unison. It merits a place on this list because it will revolutionize astronomy by providing a senstive eye on mm wavelength light where early universe star/planet formation can be viewed best. Each of its 12 m antennas will observe in bands ranging fom 30 Ghz to 1 Thz and the array will have specialized telescope transporters which will enable baselines ranging from 150 m to 16 km. ALMA is only practical in respect to the grandiose telescopes on this list; it the the most ambitious ground-based telescope ever built and costs in excess of one billion US dollars.

The future of great astronomical observatories
This list is merely my musings on astronomical observatories. There are more productive observatories that have already built, or will be built, but these are the most exciting in my humble opinion. This list does not include even more speculative projects such as plans for a lunar radio telescope or an extremely sensitive and larger LISA. There are other planned observatories not mentioned, like IXO, that just didn't make the list.
It is of note that there is an over arching principle of segmentation present in all of these observatories; these telescopes use multiple almost identical components working in unison in order to gather signal. LISA, the SKA, TPF, and ALMA use interferometry or correlation to observe. The EELT, TMT, JWST, use segmented primary mirrors. GMT uses several identical mirrors to simulate one primary mirror. LSST uses a massive array of CCD detectors. Modern technology and the economic/complexity benefits of reproducible industrial construction make this possible, but it takes modern computing to gather the data from the individual receiving elements and produce coherent observations and science.
